Children of Dune

Post by Cal Wright »

Maybe I should start off by saying, that I have never read the books. I watched the craptacular 80s movie. I have the Dune saga that the Sci Fi channel produced, and love it. So, while watching Flash Gordon today, Sci Fi has been pimping thier new creation. In fact, this has been going on for a month or two now. Tomorrow night at 9c Children of Dune The Women will come on. Hopefully that will kick ass. However, next sunday at 8c Frank Hurberts Children of Dune comes on, and both look like they are going to kick ass.

The miniseries was pretty well done. It looks like it will be ok, but a bit aloof for those who don't know what is going on.

The book was better than the mini-series.

I gotta tell you, the later Dune books were the ramblings of a madman. Messiah sucked, and I couldn't read past God-Emperor, which just got more and more bizarre.

I thought the Sci Fi series really laid things out. It was great, and now I can't wait until Children of Dune comes on. It's going to fucking rock.

and no I didn't judge Dune by the miniseries. I figured it would suck because of the 80s movie, but I was overly surprised. Maybe that's why it's in my miniscule DVD collection and the movie isn't.

That's why they probably compressed both books into the mini-series. In interviews Cox said that they took the best parts out of both because they got increasingly obscure and unclear.

I thought it was made in 1980. Either way it sucked. I don't see how you can say that with a straight face man.

Let me put this in other terms, then.

Imagine someone making a new version of TWoK:

In this, Carol Marcus seduces Joachim in order to milk him of information.
McCoy dies in the Kobiyashi Maru simulation.
Kirk has telekinentic powers.

If someone took those kind of liberties with a storyline you've loved for more than twenty years, you'd say it sucked too, correct?

In the mini-series we had:

Irulan seducing Feyd-Rautha in order to milk him of information.
Thufir Hawat dies in the Harkonnen attack.
Paul causes a fountain to spurt forth with his "powers".

The acting was really good, the story was well done, and the dialoge was incredible. WTF is your malfunction. It is a scifi classic. Even Earthworm Jim spoofed him by having the puppy quote Paul's famous "I will not fear.." lines.

1984. And as illustration for the novel, it's great. As a movie, it's a stinkeroo. But more faithful to the original than the mini-series.

Sorry about the date. I really whis the special effects had been better or at least changed when they made the special edition.

Just not the Prequels!!!!!!

And it got much weirder and more confusing in the later books.

The movie, while being a typical Lynch, was very good.

The Horror That Is The Mini-series lacked about everything the movie had.

1) Good actors. The boy that played Paul portrayed him totally wrong. He had nothing to do with the Paul in the book: a wise-for-his-age, young man in control of himself. In the mini series we had a spoiled brat. Comparing McLachlan to that boy is like comparing the Mount everest to a road bumb.
2) Good sets. The sets in the mini-series, especially the second part sucked so much ass it wasn't normal. You could even *see* they were playing in front of badly drawn desert scenes.
3) They massacred the story line. Lynch did it, too. But where his were only done to compress the movie (like the sound modules). The mini-series did so many things so terribly wrong. Especially Irulan. Just having her because of a Babe-factor (TM) was wrong in so many ways...

Sumed up, the mini-series was a utter failure. Boring, unrealistic, with bad actors giving stupid speeches.

The movie is sooo good. I watch it every time I see it on TV.

That's the Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear, from the book.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

Oh sure, the book did mention Harkonnens running around with orange hair and heart plugs, the Atreides using 'wierding modules', and the Sardaukar wearing stupid rubber suits. Very faithful...

The Baron and his family did have red hair.
The weirding modules was just his way of making the Atreides, and through Paul, the Fremen powerful. You can't just tell in a movie why the Fremen were so fierce warriors and could go against Sardaukar.
And the Rubber suits were better than those...turbans they wore in the mini-series.
At least Lynch held the basic plot line together. Something the mini-series didn't.

The only problems Frank Herbert had with continuity were the wierding modules and it raining at the end. Seeing as how Sardaukar uniforms are only mentioned, and not described, what the fuck are they suppoed to look like?

I haven't read Dune. That said, the first time I saw the movie I thought it sucked, as I couldn't understand what was going on. Then I saw the mini-series, which got the basic story line across. Then I watched the movie again, and this time it made sense. The movie is better than the mini-series.

I've read most of the original Dune books (Almost done with Heretics), and yeah, it does tend to get a little confusing towards the end. Then again, it's a three thousand year jump to God Emperor, then a thousand and a half jump to Heretics of Dune. Little changes like Caladan-Dan and Giedi Prime-Gammu are expected.

Personally, I can't wait to see the mini-series coming out, I wanna see how it relates to Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. Time will tell...

Finished Heretics, and I finally get what the f*cking Scattering was. My question, why the hell they care about the Old Empire in the first place...

What exactly was the Scattering? Iv read all the books, and cant figure it out. And as for what the Honored Matres were running from in Chapterhouse, I think I know what it is.

**SPOILER WARNING**

In the newest Dune Prequel book, Omnius (the head of the AI), makes copies of himself and launches them into space, to explore and found new machine worlds. I think the the Matres found one of those worlds, and its after them now.
