Post by Spyder »

For the linux people here, what window managers are you using?

I'm giving Enlightenment a try, it's kind of weird...

Windowmaker, hate it, slow and uses shitloads of screenspace, but using it since stuff won't compile on my broken machine (broken GCC, compiling that takes a full day on a P-120). When I get around to installing the neccesary stuff, I'll get icewm.

Most people here use desktop environments like KDE or GNOME, with KWM and whatever.

My P-120 is too shitty to run either.

There was someone on a newsgroup I frequent that swears by Enlightenment so I thought I'd give it a try.

So far I think I like it. It loads instantly, is somewhat pretty (yes, I like a nice looking desktop, so sue me) and you can have 100% screen real estate for applications.

But then again I've only been using it for about two hours...I'll let you know how I get on.

I think it's bloated.

KDE all the way. I use KMail for my E-mail and Konqueror for my web-browsing too.

The only thing I had trouble with in KDE was sound, I was getting sound-lag which I assume had something to do with ARTS, not an overly big issue given that Windows is still a more viable OS for games. I started using gnome which solved the lag problem, but then gaim suddenly went quiet.

Enlightenment seems fun but I'm not too fond of the lack of integrated filemanager. Although apparently version 17 is going to fix that.

A windowmanager is not supposed to have a filemanager. You are thinking about a desktop environment.

KDE is not a windowmanager, it's a desktop environment. KWM is a windowmanager.

Why did they have to integrate Konquerer's web browsing functions with it's file manager functions? Resembles a certain corporation...

I like Mozilla/Phoenix/[other gecko based browser] because they have the best standards support. I've just started learning web page development, and the other browsers' lack of complete CSS support is a pain. Though can't you configure Konq to use Moz's rendering engine?

KDE is sooooo bleedin' slow.
Whenever I have to use Linux, I take GNOME. Much faster.
