The AMX 40 can be an absolute bastard. I've bounced shells off it with the M1A2 at point blank range. The AMX-40 sucks horribly otherwise though. I had to drive one on the way to the AMX-12, and I basically just chanted "Vive le France" as the tank slowly crawled its way to the frontlines to die gloriously against anything with a gun bigger than 50mm.

I'm curious to see what they launch with given that they have renders and screenshots of tanks that just aren't on the tech tree they have up. That said, I'm super pumped about the British tree. I want to drive a Comet.

Re: World of Tanks
I haven't gone far enough to see any AMX's period, let alone a 40 (just now reached Tier 3...which was fast I suppose, but I got a free Premium Stewart for it!). But I am not looking forward to it now, if it bounces shells that much. And funnily enough, despite having better tanks (A Panzer II among them) the only Top Gun I have is in a Loltraktor. Funny how that works out (only five kills...but still the best). I've also found that the base gun works the best for that tank, the Breda gun SUCKS at penetrating and eats up ammo too much.

Re: World of Tanks
Yeah, the AMX 40 is a piece of shit whenever it meets anything same tier or larger, but that sloped armor can be a bitch to pen. I actually got a Steel Wall on the little bastard right before I sold it. The AMX 12t is much more fun and someday I might even see what the higher tiers of that line can do, but I just can't muster the will to go grind credits and be arty bait for hours on end (I have both the Patton and GwPanther researched, will likely never buy the GWP, but I'm close to the next AMX light, my M103 only needs the engine and long grind to the T110E5, and am maybe 15k xp from the IS-3).

Re: World of Tanks
The alternatives to the Leichttraktor's starting 37mm cannon are both 20mm autocannon. Autocannon in general do not perform well against enemy tanks at long range or against frontal armor. There are a few exceptions like the long-barreled L112 autocannon on the Panzer II, which is at least vaguely competitive in terms of penetration, but generally machine guns just aren't the way to go for tanks in this game unless your strategy consists of picking battles carefully, charging into close range at high speed and riddling the flanks and rear of poorly protected enemy vehicles.Skywalker_T-65 wrote:I haven't gone far enough to see any AMX's period, let alone a 40 (just now reached Tier 3...which was fast I suppose, but I got a free Premium Stewart for it!). One exception- in my opinion, for the low-tier French tanks, the 25mm gun is the best thing on offer until some of the higher-tier 47mm guns show up, despite being a glorified antitank rifle.

Re: World of Tanks
Eh, go figure. I only unlocked the Breda gun since I was blitzing to Tier 3 to finish that darn tutorial and get my Stuart. Yeah, I got the L112 on my Panzer, and it works much better than the Breda. Though that's only if I hit them in the side, since I tend to get matched with bigger tanks when I use the Panzer. Hence using the Leichttraktor more, since it is fast enough (fully upgraded) to let me get on the flanks of other tanks.
Also, how useful is a Stewart anyway? I haven't had a chance to use it yet, so I would like to know what I'm getting myself into here.
EDIT: Oh, and not only is it premium, but I have 100% crew for it.

The AMX 40 can be fun, but only when the matchmaker doesn't mistake it for a scout. Despite being a tier 4 light, its not a scout, its more like a miniture heavy. It's got good armor, (almost as thick as the old KV's, with better slope) but that's all it really has going for it, its best gun is, well, crappy, and it can only reach its top speed when going downhill, on pavement. On level ground you'll never see even half of its listed top speed of 50 kph.

Re: World of Tanks
The Stuart's a zippy little scouty thing, really. If you can find some undefended arty, you're in.
I'm not sure how the premium one compares to the normal one, but I wasn't a fan of it myself. It's happy until the moment something hits it, at which point it turns inside out.

Re: World of Tanks
T-65, the game is fun. Just beware of the dreaded Tier 4 hump. This is due to every Tier 4 vehicle more or less being only a marginal improvement over Tier 3, but suddenly facing far, far deadlier opponents. Tier 5 is a massive leap over Tier 4.
However, a few T4 vehicles are decent. Virtually all Tier 5 Mediums and TDs are good.

Re: World of Tanks
Oh yeah, its fun alright. I'm sticking to Tier I/II right now though, since my best earning tanks are the Loltraktor (I love that name ) and the PzII. I also joined the SDN channel, though I doubt anyone will be online when I am. Oh and Vanas...the Stuart is very fast and scouty, but I got gutted by the even faster M22. I swear, that thing was literally running circles around me, even with a fully upgraded tank with 100% crew (thank God for Premiums! And free ones too!).

Re: World of Tanks
It's a scouty tank. Most of them are fast and zippy, though the T4 and 5 lights are generally faster and zipper than the T3 ones.
Except the Pz38NA, which is very much the wooden spoon winner in the scout tank category.

First off: Oh shut up, that was a momentary mistake, look a couple posts up at my last one...spelled correctly there!Simon_Jester wrote:...It's totally hilarious; how on Earth did that happen? Someone hose you down in vain with an autocannon for five minutets?

STUART. Not Stewart.
That being said, I got in a shooting match with a T-18, a Pz38(T) (or was it 35(T)? I don't remember exactly) and a PzII. That would be where the autocannon comes in. And considering I came out of the mission with only 15 percent health...it was a close run thing. So I would guess the miracle of me getting out of that shootout alive got me the medal. I'm also fairly certain both the 38 (or 35) along with the PzII kept bouncing shells off me. Go figure.
EDIT: Oh, an a couple other Stuarts took potshots at me and ran off when they saw my tank magically repel the other tanks fire.

I really liked my AMX 40. One top gun and three steel walls. 64% win rate too. Thing can even bounce tier fives relatively reliably with good angling and derpy movements.
However, I know what I'm doing tomorrow all day and that's Warplanes closed beta. Awww yeah.

Re: World of Tanks
The french Tier 4's are weird. both are well armoured, slow and undergunned, but the tier 4 light, against all sense, is slower and more heavily armoured than the tier 4 heavy.

I am well aware that the AMX 12t is an ambushing, backstabbing specialist. However, my credit grinding tanks are the Lowe which I have had for ages and the T34 premium from the American heavy line revision. Both of which are prime arty bait, which also require many hours of gameplay so I can purchase the Patton and IS-3 (only a day's easy grind from unlocking that in my IS) and their equipment. The AMX line is still relatively cheap, so that's not the credits I'm as worried about, unless I decide to rig those tanks. If there was a simple "No Arty" checkbox next to the Battle button I might even be persuaded to spend some real money on WoT again, but until I get that I'm done giving Wargaming cash.

Re: World of Tanks
You know, TOG-1 and TOG-2 would make good low-tier British heavies... or maybe that's being saved for premium.
Or they may be "orphans:" the developers may have come up with models for a few particular British tanks, without having properly rendered models for the tanks that should go above and below them in the tech tree.
By way of example, I'm sure Wargaming has a model for the Somua S35, since a version of it is a German premium. And it's certainly a well-known and important tank for the French prewar, one that would make a very logical low-tier light or medium tank for them. But apparently they haven't got the whole tree sorted out, or at least hadn't as of the last patch, so they didn't include it because they don't want to add partial trees that don't go anywhere past Tier 4 or 5. Or that's my best guess.
Some of those tanks may be premium- that's one way they make actual money off introducing a new tree, because people buy those tanks.Alkaloid wrote:I'm curious to see what they launch with given that they have renders and screenshots of tanks that just aren't on the tech tree they have up. Re: World of Tanks
Ya, Wargaming's pattern has been to add new nations as "bare bones" tech trees, then flesh them out in subsequent releases. The Americans took a while to get their Hellcat, and the French are waiting on their entire artillery and TD legs. I am sure the British will be getting similar treatment.

Re: World of Tanks
My god, the Hellcat is the most amazing tank ever created. It's everything US tankers have been wanting.
My first game, with a Stock hellcat? 5 kills, Class II Mastery. Used up all 42 shells.
Second game? Got hit by arty early, draw.
Third game? 5 kills, including a Panther and KV-2 solo, Ace tanker. Used ~38 shells.

I admit I used mass free XP and gold to go straight past wolverine to M18 with 90mm, but I'd agree with that assessment. I don't shoot my ammo out, and rarely use more than 10-15 shells, but its the one tank where I very rarely feel like I didn't strongly contribute, and fun as all get out to drive.

Re: World of Tanks
It's good practice for heavy tanks.
The key is that you must pick a single place on the battlefield, where fights commonly take place, and go for the jugular- trundle toward that place, find enemies to duke it out with. You're not fast enough to change your mind and zip across half the battlefield in a minute the way some tanks do, and if you decide to climb a hill it's gonna take you a while.
Defending your base can be a good strategy too, if the enemy is weak in artillery and you see too much of your team rushing off to get killed on one side of the map. That's how I got my Top Gun in the AMX-40.
