(Greece)Neo-Nazi MP attacks fellow female MP's on live TV

USA Today
USA Today wrote: Greek prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for a member of a far-right party who slapped a left-wing politician on live television during a heated roundtable debate, the BBC reports.

Ilias Kasidiaris, who was elected to Greece's parliament from the Golden Dawn Party in last month's elections, is shown in video footage throwing a glass of water at one of the two women on the morning talk show.

When the other woman, a member of the Greek Communist Party, intervened, Kasidiaris slapped her in the face three times, the BBC reports.

Kasidiaris was apparently provoked when Rena Dourou of the radical left-wing Syriza Party mentioned his alleged involvement in an armed robbery five years ago.

A journalist at Antenna tells the AFP news agency that colleagues were unable to stop Kasidiaris from leaving the building after the melee.

Golden Dawn, which won just under 7% of the votes in the recent election, has a strong anti-immigration policy and is accused of being racist by left-wing parties.

Its leader has raised questions about the Holocaust, but denied being a neo-Nazi, the BBC says.
AP wrote:ATHENS, Greece — Greece's election campaign turned ugly Thursday on live TV: The spokesman of the extreme-right Golden Dawn party, after trading insults of "commie" and "fascist," lunged at two female left-wing politicians on a mainstream morning talk show, throwing water at one and smacking the other three times across the face.

The violent display reminiscent of trash TV, a week and a half ahead of crucial elections, stunned Greeks as they seek to avoid a catastrophic exit from the common euro currency. Prosecutors immediately issued an arrest warrant for Ilias Kasidiaris, whose party alarmed Europe by gaining 21 of Parliament's 300 seats in Greece's inconclusive May 6 elections.

Golden Dawn, which vehemently denies the neo-Nazi label, has been accused of violent attacks against immigrants in Athens. The party denies involvement in the attacks, insisting it is a nationalist patriotic group campaigning on a platform of ridding the country of illegal immigrants and cleaning up crime-ridden neighborhoods. It has advocated planting anti-personnel mines along Greece's borders to stop migrants from sneaking across.

The attack "put on public display what was widely known," said the radical left-wing Syriza party, whose member Rena Dourou was splashed with water on the show. "The true face of this criminal organization."

Tempers frayed on the daily morning political show on the private Antenna television station during a political debate, to which representatives of all seven parties that won parliamentary seats on May 6 had been invited.

Discussion had turned to the country's natural resources. But it went off on a tangent about political history in Greece, which suffered a vicious civil war between Communists and the right-wing after World War II, and a seven-year military dictatorship that ended in 1974.

Kasidiaris, his temper wearing thin, shot an insult of "you old Commie" at prominent Communist Party member Liana Kanelli, in return for her branding him a "fascist." Kasidiaris also took offense at a reference by Dourou to a court case pending against him.

It all careened into violence after Dourou, 58, said there was a "crisis of democracy when people who will take the country back 500 years have got into the Greek parliament." The 31-year-old Kasidiaris, who has served in the Greek military's special forces, bounded out of his seat and hurled a glass of water at her, shouting an insult loosely translated as "you circus act."

Talk show host Giorgos Papadakis – shouting `'no, no, no!" – ran over to Kasidiaris, attempting to calm him down. But a furious Kasidiaris turned on Kanelli, who had gotten out of her chair and appeared to throw a newspaper at the Golden Dawn member.

Kasidiaris hit Kanelli three times – with right-left-right slaps to the sides of her head.

Papadakis tried and failed to restrain him.

The channel cut to a commercial break, and returned five minutes later without Kasidiaris.

The court case Dourou referred to was one in which Kasidiaris is accused of participation in a 2007 attack on a student. He faces charges of assisting in robbery and bodily harm after his car was allegedly used in the incident in which a student had his identity card stolen. Kasidiaris claims the accusation is politically motivated by Syriza members. The case was to be heard in court on Wednesday but has been postponed to June 11.

Papadakis and Kanelli later said attempts had been made to restrain Kasidiaris after the scuffle by shutting him in a room in the TV channel's building, but he broke through the door and left. Police were searching for him to serve the arrest warrant, which under Greek law must be carried out within 24 hours.

"The government condemns in the most categorical way the attack by Golden Dawn spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris against Liana Kanelli and Rena Dourou," government spokesman Dimitris Tsiodras said. "This attack is an attack against every democratic citizen."

Tsiodras called on Golden Dawn to condemn its member's actions.

For its part, Golden Dawn said it was Kanelli who first attacked Kasidiaris, "hitting him unprovoked in the face with a packet of documents."

"Golden Dawn continues its fight for a strong nationalist movement against everyone, and naturally against the orphans of Marx, who dominate on the (broadcast) channels and are playing a dirty propaganda game," the party said in a statement.

"If you want us to condemn our co-fighter for a truly unfortunate moment, you should first condemn the insults and the attack by Liana Kanelli, otherwise you are nothing but sad hypocrites following orders."

Golden Dawn won nearly 7 percent of the vote on May 6, giving it 21 seats in the 300-member Parliament. It was a radical increase from its showing in the previous elections in 2009, when the party won just 0.31 percent of the vote.

Greeks reeling from two years of austerity amid their country's vicious financial crisis punished the two main parties, the conservative New Democracy and socialist PASOK, turning instead to smaller radical parties to the right and left.

The 300 deputies took up their seats for a day last month before parliament was dissolved and new elections called as no party won enough votes to form a government on its own. Negotiations for a coalition government collapsed after 10 days.

"The people voted for them because they didn't know what Golden Dawn was. They didn't know they're a new form of neo-Nazis," said Athenian Maria Misaridaki as she walked through the capital's central Syntagma Square. "They saw the violence. It should open their eyes so as not to vote for them."
Three notes
One this was live television. Live television, how did Kasidiaris think this was going to work out.
Two note how USA Today makes excuse after excuse for a Neo-Nazi Holocaust Denier because apparently we must be fair even to Nazis.
Three attacks occure at the one minute ten second mark.

Ah wait part did not get posted, reading the other coverage I've not posted you'll find examples of them saying "so called Neo-Nazi party" and mentioning that Kasidiaris was "provoked".

Ah, those excuses! I do wonder about how much of an insult it is to call a senior member of the Communist Party an 'old Commie,' though.

Chuck Norris is on the case;

"You dare to assault Liana you scoundrel? I'm coming"

In seriousness though; the left far outweigh the right in Greece (or at least it did prior to the current cluster fuck) thanks to the memories of the junta. This stunt (I hope) will help to cripple Golden Dawn more than anything.

EDIT :: I won't lie though, my Greek isn't good enough to follow the bulk of this, phrases pop in and out for me watching that.

First post.

I'm Greek myself. I can tell you that it was pretty much the way it is described: the neo-Nazi began a shouting match with the other two, threw a glass of water at one woman, the other tried to hit him with a newspaper and he hit her back. Now, what kind of 25 year old man would attack a woman close to 60, even if she hit him first, this I leave for you to judge. He even said later that he received a paper cut below the eye, but didn't prove it in any way, shape or form. You can judge this, too. As to Esquire's question, "old commie" is the literal translation, a more practical one is "dirty commie" or even "f***ing commie" (when you attach the word "old" before another noun in Greek, it becomes degoratory / insulting). Y'know, different languages, different expressions. It wasn't just meant to be descriptive.

They are doing it better than you, and you're the one who everyone will think messed up big time on live national television. So (goose-) step it up, Goldie.

Words fail me. The guys movements are so... animal-like. Unless the voters of this party (always a possibility with right-wingers) are dumber than bricks there is no possibility of this not exploding into their faces :wtf:

I don't think it will. The online response to this incident has been mixed, with many commenters praising Kasidiaris. Unfortunately this kind of macho bullshit has its appeal. If anything, it will help convince idiots that Golden Dawn is serious and worthy of their vote.

Greece's social standards and cohesion are completely broken (the country is in free fall, if you will). That's the problem that enables the Golden Dawn and anybody else to do whatever they want. That guy is doing the Nazi salute? So what, pensions have been cut by more than half. Those guys openly declare that they will 'purge' (this exact word) the country of undesirables? So what, half of us have lost their jobs. That guy publicly beats up people when they ask about his impending trial? So what, so what, so what. Outside pressure and the austerity programs, which basically amount to 'let's cut whatever and see what remains', have made Greek society so besieged and malleable that even neo-Nazis can present themselves as saviors. That's something Europe should consider for a while, instead of letting Merkel talk about Greek neofascism like she's saying "our test subject is developing complications".

It's always tricky to judge things from that medium IMO; too many internet tough guys tend to skew the data.

True. But recent polls have consistently shown them at 4% or, while they've been beating up immigrants and Lefties every night and generally being obvious nazi fucks. This incident is significant only because it was caught on live cam, and I really doubt it'll make a difference to those who support them, who already hate these "dirty commies" and others from the Left. The comments, both online and on tv, only support this.

Now the jackass is suing his victims for defamation- as if Greek politicians need to act more American.
MSNBC wrote: Greek politician who attacked rivals on TV sues victims for defamation

By Msnbc.com staff and wire services

A Greek far-right politician who hit a left-wing politician in the face and threw water at another during a live television talk show sued his victims for defamation on Monday.

Ilias Kasidiaris, spokesman of the far-right Golden Dawn party, said he would also sue private TV station Antenna for wrongful detention after he was locked in a room in the studio following the attack until he broke down the door and escaped.

Kasidiaris shocked viewers last week with the attack on Rena Dourou, a deputy in the radical leftist Syriza party and Liana Kanelli, a veteran communist deputy, during a heated debate ahead of national elections on June 17.

On the show, a spirited discussion spiraled out of control when Kasidiaris threw a glass of water at Dourou. Shortly afterwards, Kanelli swatted Kasidiaris with a newspaper, and he responded by punching her in the face with enough force to leave her bruised.

The 31-year-old former army commando went into hiding after the assault but issued a statement at the weekend blaming the two middle-aged women for deliberately provoking him into the attack.

"I have come to the prosecutor today to file a lawsuit against Mrs. Kanelli and Mrs. Dourou for unprovoked defamation, and against TV station Antenna for my illegal detention," Kasidiaris, dressed in a white shirt and dark sunglasses, told reporters outside the court.

By lying low, Kasidiaris avoided an arrest warrant for the attack. According to Greek law, the arrest warrant for a minor crime must be carried out by midnight on the day following the incident, BBC reported.

Golden Dawn denies being a neo-Nazi party but its image has been sullied by continuously replayed footage of the talk show incident as well as a variety of other pictures showing party members splashed with fake blood, making Nazi-style salutes or grinning next to an oven at the Nazi death camp Auschwitz.

Greek politician who attacked rivals blames them

Parties across the political spectrum condemned Kasidiaris and said his actions shed light on Golden Dawn.

"This attack is an attack against every democratic citizen,” caretaker government spokesman Dimitris Tsiodras said, according to Athens News.

The leftist Syriza party, tipped as likely to get the most votes in the coming election, said the attack showed "the real face of this criminal organization," referring to Golden Dawn.

"This young 'gentleman,' the Golden Dawn spokesman, proved today that he is a representative of a group of neo-Nazis that apart from being ultra-right are also cowards and bullies," said Fofi Gennimata, of the center-left Pasok party, according to Athens News. "We call on the people who voted for Golden Dawn to seriously rethink it."

TV show attack shows 'real face' of far-right in Greece?

Speaking at the opening of the party's offices in an Athens suburb on Sunday, Kasidiaris said he had been set up and was acting in self-defence after Kanelli threw a newspaper at him.

"I never expected that I would be hit in the face on live TV," he said. "I did what millions of Greeks would have done - when you get hit in the face you have to defend yourself."

Kasidiaris was already due to stand trial on Monday on separate charges — which he denies — of helping assailants attack an assistant university professor in 2007, but that trial was postponed until September.

Golden Dawn, which uses an ancient Greek symbol resembling the swastika as its logo, won 7 percent in the inconclusive May 6 election, promising to rid Greece of illegal immigrants and seal its borders with landmines.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Meh, that's SOP for them. They always sue the victim that dares to press charges. And they get away with it because they have significant support among the police and courts. Hell, last week the police arrested 8 of them for fighting with some anarchists in a cafeteria, trashing the place and sending a 52y old to the hospital. Now that 52y old will stand trial along with them, for defamation and incitement.

I must object to using this thug as an example of a politician though. He's got as much in common with them as I to a football player. And what the hell did the Americans do that was even nearly as bad?

Anyway, tomorrow is the big day. I hear results will start getting posted at 9:30 local.

Pretty sad display from a 31 year old army commando as that last article describes. Video is a pathetic showing of his actions and that he swings like a angry 10 year old boy.
