from you
my taste in music covers almost all genres but is fairly shallow
so recommend me stuff that i almost certainly wouldn't run across even if i was specifically looking into some genre but which you think is awesome
the one subjective caveat is that i would prefer stuff that has a sound that's pretty distinctive on first listen
for example i like a lot of electronic but even good electronica has a tendency to sound completely generic and become just another track in a playlist
but if you're unsure don't hesitate to post

To explain, they're a band who perform songs that are somewhat related to Star Trek. It's silly, but a fun listen.

music and literature are both like this
if you ask for recommendations you get a giant list of shit people like that is AMAZINGLY FAMOUS and you already know about
but its impractical to just read/listen to everything
so you need people to say 'this thing i found under a doormat is good' or 'this band at a carnival is awesome'

i figured in testing i might manage to get a few people like phant posting fairly obscure hip hop or tith posting whatever he posts or maybe even oni posting the rare industrial track that isn't shitty
you know, just enough that i have some new leads for a couple weeks

The Protomen. Nerdy as all shit since they have written not one, but two rock operas about megaman. Here is a sample from their website.
Clicky
You can also find most of their songs on random AMVs or lyric videos on youtube.

i feel bad because i see you expect me to post hip hop and i was going to post anything but
i guess i can tell you to listen to Section.80 by Kendrick Lamar, this guy has both good technical skills and excellent lyrical content
i really enjoyed Long Distance by Onra... i don't know how to describe it, listen to Sitting Back and The One which features T3 from Slumvillage
okay so Drake's Take Care and the title track with Rihanna is hella popular, right?
you shouldn't listen to it
you should listen to this instead: I'll Take Care of U by Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie xx
Jamie xx remixed GSH's last album (I'm New Here) into We're New Here and it was easily my favourite album of the year, and then he goes and works with Drake to make the title track on Drake's new album and it's aight, probably best track on the album, and I love Rihanna's voice, but there is no way that track compares to GSH's vocals. Rihanna just doesn't have that emotion on it. I'm just going to assume it was an homage or tribute to GSH, since he did just pass away in May.
Just a note, the album is really bass heavy (like a lot of Jamie xx's work) and you really need something capable of putting out that low end to properly enjoy it. I'm no audiophile, but this album sounds wayyyyyy better with good bass reproduction.
GSH has been called the godfather of hip hop so i guess that still qualifies? I don't care, listen to it.
ummm have you heard the new Florence + the Machine? Ceremonials is really good, even people that have tastes I trust who didn't enjoy Lungs tell me they dig it. I really like What the Water Gave Me.
also the new M83 album is reallly long since it's a double disc, and it's not all 100% amazing, but there's a good number of gems on it, i highly recommend giving it a few listens: Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
I've really enjoyed the last few Calvin Harris tracks out, Feel So Close and Bounce. You probably heard both by now tho.
OHHH this track is great, Bachelors of Science remix of Infinity by The xx:
i'd give you some more ideas but my phone is dead and i just broke my desktop with all my music on it so I can't look at everything I've listened to recently; i'm going off memory and recent youtube favourites
i guess i'll close this off with some Arctic Monkeys: 505 (Live at the Apollo)

i realize i pretty much did give you a list of stuff i like but i hope some of this is good and interesting to you
also there's a tumblr with all sorts of random electronic and other music that's really good for the most part, even stuff that i wouldn't normally listen to: http://njoithis.tumblr.com/ vaguely nsfw for occasional pictures of half-naked girls
and I just remembered: Frank Ocean released Nostalgia,ULTRA earlier this year (for free)
he's with Odd Future but he's not super weird and awkward like Tyler and some of the others, not so much rap as RnB
did a couple tracks on Jay-Z and Kanye West's album from this summer, but I like his stuff, especially Novacane and American Wedding.

I Come To Shanghai have two albums available as "pay what you want", it's pretty good electronic indie stuff.
I Come To Shanghai - I Come To Shanghai
I Come To Shanghai - Eternal Life vol.1
Selene Project an EP released by Richard Rich and Max Tannone based on the movie Moon. It's great themed stuff.
Selene Project
Max Tannone is also responsible for some cool remix work, stuff like Mos Dub, which is Mos Def cut over classic dub reggae beats and Jaydiohead which should also be fairly self explanatory.
Childish Gambino is solid rap stuff (though it's angsty middle class minority in the suburbs rather than gangster) and because of this it pushes the genre beyond the usual conventions (in my limited opinion) and there are plenty of places that still host his old free releases [urhttp://laxbrah.com/2011/06/05/childish-gambino-discography/]this being one I just found[/url]. His latest, Camp, is his first paid release album.
Because you aren't Australian I'm going to recommend 2 giants and 1 favourite midget of Australian electronic music from the nineties. Youtube is packed full of examples of their fairly diverse discographies.
1) TISM.
2) Regurgitator
3) Gerling

I listen to this track on repeat. Like, actually on repeat. The video is fantastic as well, IMO.

pretty sure most people's awareness of deep purple extends about as far as "that band that did smoke on the water, right?"
hence why i did not post smoke on the water and instead posted some of their obscure 80s material when they had a completely different lineup and entirely different sound

For instance in my playlist I have lots of music of the genre I like, but then I mix that up with a lot of movie themes plus a bunch of fun/whacky/weird stuff.
Just so that it breaks across different moods.
(My coworkers usually get a very weirded out look after spending time in/close to my room).
What genres do you ordinarily listen to (hence isn't obscure to you) and what moods do you want? Only serious or tounge in cheek stuff as well?Nieztchean Uber-AMoeba wrote:so recommend me stuff that i almost certainly wouldn't run across even if i was specifically looking into some genre but which you think is awesome

i'm not so big on the comedic or nerdrock stuff tbh
and i guess the very harsh metal varieties i have no taste for (generally the metal i like is symphonic or proggy stuff)
that's about it as far as 'things i don't listen to'

+1 to that Protomen recommendation. I don't like their second album though.
I would suggest DJ Shadow.

I would also recommend Ed Alleyne Johnson
