Have you ever been the lone Democrat (or Republican)?

Post by Superman »

I have this group of friends that I play poker with every Saturday night. We are all pretty good friends, but I am the only liberal out of the group (the rest being conservatives). They will say some pretty stupid things, in my opinion, and all of the them agree with each other. I am not one to just go with the flow, so occasionally I'll voice my opinion.

It's really funny, they are all pro attack on Iraq (except me), but I am the only one out of the group serving in the military. They are all for tougher law enforcement, the three strikes law and harsh prison terms, but all of them smoke pot. They listen to rap, but they are racist as hell against black people. If I didn't know better, I would say they're dumb ass rednecks.

Anyone have any experiences being the only Democrat, or Republican, out of a group of friends?

Yeah. I'm the only leftwinger among my group of friends. One of them thinks we should nuke all the "ay-rabs" and is your typical RW xtian. Another is a fundie that claims that trees were sandblasted to look like they were many thousands of years old. Another one is big on the personal responsibility stuff but does nothing but wrestle and gets himself into trouble.

My dad and I are one of the few leftwingers in the city we live in. Wright Patterson is close by, so we have a lot of military people. Our city also has many redneck/richie/fundie hybrids
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Luckily, only one of my friends in this group is a Christian, and he keeps his mouth shut. Oh, he SAYS he is a Christian, but he gets stoned and drunk weekly, and he has an addiction to porn.

He realizes, however, that I have a degree in biology so he never opens his mouth about evolution or creationism.

Not the only...but my group consists of many not care or screaming changers with a couple conservative...one hard liner...and liberals.

And yet we discuss none of this poker night, except lamenting our jobs and their wives.

Most of the people I know at Uni are so liberal it must hurt which really isn't surprising but arguing with them is like arguing with a brick wall.

I and my family (immediate, anyway) are the only conservatives I know in the whole of New York state... Seriously. All my friends are either liberal to the point where we agree on just about nothing politically, or are undecided/don't care. All my friends parents are painfully liberal, and my school reeks of it. It can be hard.

Most of my good friends are neo-cons. I would call myself middle of the spectrum.

I have to say it again -

I'm a leftist, but it always disappoints me that most of the people at this end of the political spectrum are morons.

But then again, most the ones that are on the other end are morons too.

I'm the only male in the group I hang out with with that doesn't have the maturity and intellectual abilities of a 10 year-old. Does that count?

It feels that way here sometimes. The only rabid fiver in the room.
Ahhh.

Well I do have that problem sometimes, I live in a community with a healthy jewish, lutheran, and methodist, with a few catholics, population...In ohio. Not to mention the fact that it is moderately wealthy.
Thus it is moderate conservative verging on nut case. Thankfully I'm going to a nice liberal arts uni next year.

Try being an athiest libertarian at a Catholic university. The longhairs are all the liberation theology/Catholic Marxism types, and the conservatives are all old-school pre-Vatican II Catholics (never mind most of them were born after 1980). It's possible to get into an argument where I'm fending off idiots from the left and the right simultaneously.

I've found that the truly educated (and self-aware) people are the ones that sample a bit from the left and right. In some arenas I am very much to the right but in others I am wholly to the left. Crossing the spectrum so much makes it hard to pin me down, really...
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

:D Try being a Methodist libertarian religion major at a school where Catholics and Southern Baptists are the majority of the religious, with 10 Greek organizations that make up ~40% of the campus. I usually have to fend off the radical left (we've been accused of being racist because we don't have quotas in place  ) and the conservatives (SB fundies) at the same time. Luckily being around y'all for so long has pretty much made me immune to mere words :D  .
