Oh, by the way, I posted the first chapter in the fanfic forum last week, it's working title is Federation. A Dauntless or Prometheus might be nice. What type of war ship would these two be categorized as? I remember someone in some old thread saying the Prommie was a dreadnaught.

You also have to consider the size of the ships, a transfer to a smaller ship class would be considered as demotion, unless it is a new prototype. What is the size of a Dauntless compared to a Norway?
Akiras, Sovereigns, Intrepids & Prometheus are all bigger than a Norway.
Defiants, Sabres, Steamrunners & Novas are smaller.
A site with good info on the classes is:

Re: Which ship?
Most Excelsiors are probably decommissioned, so I doubt an Excelsior would be a likely choice. The Prometheus is also a one-of-a-kind ship, so either the Dauntless or the Nova. Probably the Nova, as the Dauntless was made as a trap for Voyager's crew.Aya wrote:Ok, in my ST fanfic, the main crew end up getting a new ship after their old one (a Norway) gets nearly totaled after a battle with a Valdore (or Warbird). I can't decide which ship they should get, the choices are:
Nova
Excelsior
Prometheus
Dauntless (SF actually builds the Dauntless class)
So, which one shoulder I pick. I'm also open to suggestions for other ships?

Or more specificly, what duty you perform, on those ships. A Norway (IMO) would fall into a destroyer/frigate designation while the Intrepid and Akira would fall into cruiser. The Prometheous would also probably fall into the category of cruiser, though it would be a battle cruiser. If your captain is trained in escort and patrol and was assigned to a destroyer/frigate type vessel, it goes to figure that SFC would assign him to a simular ship both in design and function.von Neufeld wrote:You also have to consider the size of the ships, a transfer to a smaller ship class would be considered as demotion, unless it is a new prototype. So if you consider a Norway a destroyer and a Steamrunner (for example) as a destroyer, or atleast categorize them for the same mission, then a transfer from one to the other reguardless of actual size of the ship would be considered even.
On a side note, if you are having your story 25 years from Nemesis, then it is way to late for an Excelcior. Sorry.

While I would say that it is ok without the MVAM, the system is an integral part of the design of the ship. To remove the system and just use the general design of the ship won't work. The thing has three sets of warp engines because of the MVAM as well as many other redundent systems because of the MVAM. It would be easier to just design a new ship with the general lines of the Prometheous than to refit or overhual a Prometheous and take out all of the moronicly redundent systems and seal the hull plates where the seperation lines were. While I have to agree that MVAM is pretty dumb, there is nothing much wrong with the ship in joined configuration. Just make the design slightly larger and expand the shuttle bay with the room saved by taking out the MVAM clamps and hull. Replace with a squadron or two of fighters.

Give 'em a Zatoichi-class ship. (I'm inventing the description of this class for you right now) Its basic design is a hybrid between the Miranda and the Akira class starship designs. In size it resembles the Nebula. Its hull is charcoal-grey in color and thickly armored, like that of the circa 2245 Constitution design, with no "glowing" nacelles or nav deflector. It packs a "rollbar" style weapons platform carrying fore-and-aft independently tracking quantorp launchers and forward-facing PPCs. Other armament includes OPS (Omnidirectional Phaser Strips) at Saucer and catamaran perimeters as well as point-defense phasers. Shuttle/fighter-bay is up front, underside of slightly swollen saucer. I'm sure you already have a fighter design in mind.

I like this one, basicly an early 23rd century design before the Galaxy and after the Excelsior.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the Excelsior. But to say that a 300-400 meter long ship that was designed to be a cruiser or battlecruiser can stand toe to toe with a 100 meter long escort, its too old.closet sci-fi fan wrote:I think Lakota style Excelsior class ships might still be around... the Lakota was able to stand toe to toe with the Defiant.Knife wrote: On a side note, if you are having your story 25 years from Nemesis, then it is way to late for an Excelcior. Right, it's the "Miranda-ized" Ambassador.Knife wrote:Raoul Duke, Jr. wrote:Give 'em a Zatoichi-class ship. Stuff like that has happened. When the British commissioned HMS Indefatigable in 1944 they rounded up as many of the original crewmembers of HMS Illustrious as they could and assigned them to the ship. This was done because several other capital ships that had been recently commissioned had significant crew problems.Howedar wrote:It is pretty silly for a whole crew to be kept together and to be assigned en masse to a new ship. If it did in fact happen, I can't imagine them being transferred to anything but another Norway without a lot of additional training.
Illustrious was crippled in early 1941 and most of her crew dispersed to other duties because the repair work took so long. Though a lot of the damage to the engines and structure couldn't be fixed and she could never do more then 20 knots afterwards.

Lol, I just realized that I have another problem: What am I going to name the ship? I've cooked up a few names:
Virginia
Harrisonburg (my hometown:D)
Mike Wong (lmao, if I used that, it would be blatant ass kissing:P)
McCain
Suggestions? I'm actually leaning towards the Ambassador. Oh and I have another request, anyone have any pictures of bridges? Doesn't matter from what ships.

Virginia is nice, but wouldn't that be too US, in a multi-world Starfleet?

Yeah, but it's overused... (Naming states, that is). With McCain, you have a chance to be different, and perhaps introduce, a little bit of history, or even establish a historic parallel.Aya wrote:Um...They have ships named after states and cities in ST. The McCain idea was from Senator McCain, the old guy who's a nam vet and was held for like 2 years in Hotel Hanoi.
Hey, I'm giving you ideias, no fair!

I think that it would be a good idea to have two captians and two ships in your story. It adds to the depth of the story and allows for foils.

No, too unbelievable, even for the B&B era. And you have to show a lot of anger towards the current government.
