I don't know the name of, or remember the function of my favorite cheesy prop, but maybe someone here will recognize it: a medium sized console device, with two long horitzontal cylinders filled with flashing red rods, anchored to the base with Big Cool Silver Things (TM) on each end.

It's been in every Trek series since TNG except Enterprise (yet), and has also made appearances in the movie Airplane 2 and the TV shows NewsRadio[/i] and SG-1 (IIRC). I vaguely remember seeing the prop in some other things as well.

Anyone recognize what I'm talking about?

I hate the argo, and i hate the "Capain's Yacht", and I hate Holodecks because even though the concept is nice, I see it as a copout for writers who can't come up with a decent plot idea.

While absolutely indispensible for the plot, the absolutely impossible Universal Translator. Never in a billion years.

I forgot to mention the cheesiest thing. V-GER!

How can a plasma weapon vaporize a BATTLECRUISER with one shot in a lightning storm!?

Plus, how did the Enterprise survive a hit from that thing, when a BATTLECRUISER, once again, couldn't? Don't tell me that Klingon ships are weaker than Feddies.

Yeah, they are. Remeber, they got hit on their rear shields, and the other ships sustained enough hits to transmit reports on the battle. The term battlecruiser itself implies de-emphasis on protection.
And Vger's weapon was plasma based, not just a ball of hot goo. Who knows what it could've contained.

I think it's that Iconian gate that was made of solid "neutronium". Likewise, the Dyson sphere that was carbon "neutronium".

I meant Twilight Zone, the Outer limits isn't on anymore
I actually like the Twlight Zone. There have been lousy eps, but the majority have been pretty sweet and had something to say about human behavior. Admittedly, it will never reach the level of the original, but at least it isn't that awful early '80s remake.

I know right! That is a good question.... I doubt the Trek writers or B&B even thought of that question or did and said who cares <insert technobabble> makes it work. But I think that they are just too lazy to explain.

That's like saying how could a turbolaser do the same. It knows "all that is knowable" it is millenia ahead of the klingons.

1) the klingons had attempted to attack V-ger, therefore it was firing to destroy, rather than a warning as it did on the enterprise.
2)They were an aging class of battlecruiser the enterprise had just had a complete overhaul

Couldn't that thingie just be a modified version of their comsystem?
Basically a beacon that when activated and the signal received by in this case the enterprise it would forcible activate the transporter beaming out whatever is attached to the transmitter.

There are still a few other inconsistiencies with that scene but I think most people (if not all) should be able to figure out what those are.

But the E-E's transporter system was offline!

We didn't see the transporters go offline, we saw the bridge console that controlled the transporters do the usual explosion.

Still there is more circumstantial evidence at losing the transporters. Data not going to the one of the transporter rooms but a hole in the hull to launch himself at the Scimitar is one piece.

Not the one on coruscant, that was more of a ziggarut, (it's in RotJ SE) probably a moffs palace/emperor's vacation site.

If any transporters were online Data wouldn't have had to have jumped.

I don't remember: does the emergency transporter itself transport? Perhaps it stays behind, such that it can still make someone rematerialize?

That is one of the continuity problems, prehaps
A) there was EM Jamming on the Schemitar too effective for the shuttle transporters to penetrate.
B) The shuttlebay was innacessible.
C)It would take longer to bring a shuttle online than to go through space

Of course the real reason is they wanted to show data fly though space.
