A protest by the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church was cut short after nearly 300 people dressed as zombies and drowned out the church members.

After announcing plans to protest at a DuPont, Washington military base, the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church found themselves being the ones protested against. Led by 27-year-old Melissa Neace, the 'zombies' outnumbered the church members nearly 300 to eight. Neace started a Facebook page titled: "Zombie'ing Westboro Baptist Church AWAY from Fort Lewis!," which created enough attention to get people to attend the protest. Neace was happy with the turnout and just wanted to take attention away from the anti-gay Christian church.

"We wanted to turn something negative around, into something people could laugh at and poke fun at...It was the easiest way to divert attention from something so hateful."

The Westboro Baptist Church is one of the most vocal anti-gay Christian churches in the country, and while not the only one, they are the best known and most extreme. The Westboro Baptist Church was founded by former lawyer, Fred Phelps. Phelps attempted numerous times to run for office in Kansas as a Democrat, but never even won a primary election. Phelps backed Al Gore for president in 1988, but as Gore and other Democrats started to embrace LGBT rights, Phelps began to demonize the Democratic party. Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church claim that President Obama is the "Antichrist" who will form an Unholy Trinity with Satan and the Pope.

Though many Christian churches hold anti-gay views, very few are as vocal as the Westboro Baptist Church. As the Westboro Baptist Church continues to use their First Amendment right to protest, it seems as if many others, 'zombies' or not, are going to be doing the same thing.

They are few, but make up for it in sheer volume and news coverage. It's also likely that not everyone could make it.

The Westboro Church sends only a handful of the family at anytime. They also send kids. Each person marches around holding 3-4 placards. 90% of the time it's easy to outnumber them.

Nope. They had been doing this shit to prominent homosexuals and AIDS victims for years and years without much media attention.

The main schtick with WBC is to be so offensive that they provoke a physical or other illegal reaction so that they can sue the reacting party in order to fund their church. The counter protest with zombies is a good answer, so long as everything remains legal, because there's no reason to get the cops involved in this shit.

And only some zombies insist on brains. Others (like Romero's, for instance) will take any parts from living or recently deceased people.

Nobody would aid them and the authorities would only make token efforts to find the perps and inevitably fail. Their tactics are so infamous and their family is so despised that anyone who wished harm upon them would simply do so in a manner that would not reveal who they were, and society wouldn't be motivated to track them down.

A quick Google search turned up several stories, but none of them come from reputable sources, just random internet sites/blogs. This was the best example I could find. If you don't feel like going there, the short version is that the van the WBC fools were using got its tires slashed after a protest in Oklahoma, and the locals wouldn't even repair it for them.
