Isn't the concept of 18 being 'an adult' a relatively new one? I vaguely remember hearing somewhere that it was quite common in the Middle Ages for women to be married off at 12 and 13 years old, that if they were old enough to bear children (post pubescent), they were old enough to marry. (I suppose longer life expectancies has changed that in modern times.)
