And therein lies the real problem: we live in an age where independence is considered the greatest possible attribute in a child. Even in grade 1, teachers grade students based on how independent they are, ie- how little supervision they require. In my son's school, the fucking report card even explicitly grades kids on how little supervision they need! As they get older, we proudly brag to our friends that my little Timmy can ride the bus by himself, wander around town by himself, entertain himself for hours while I maintain my busy workaday life along with my wife, who also maintains her busy workaday life, etc. How convenient that little Timmy doesn't need anyone to watch what he's doing! And oh look, little Timmy wants to go over to little Sarah's house again. How adorable! I'm sure her parents will watch them carefully instead of reading the paper, watching TV, or preparing a sales report for that big Monday meeting.

Eh. My parents don't even let me walk down the road to my friend's house to watch a DVD and eat popcorn without his parents being there.

One of my teacher-friends works at an elementary school where two kids were walked in on, in the school bathroom: a fourth-grade boy (9 years old) with a second-grade girl (7 years old), completely naked on the floor, having sex with one another. Obviously, neither had reached puberty yet, so the act itself did nothing, but it makes you wonder where those kids picked up on enough, err, information to do a convincing performance.

Students don't receive 'the difference of the sexes' lecture until they reach 5th grade, and then don't get sex ed until 7th.

Romeo and Juliet is about 12 and 13 year olds having sex. This is not a new phenomenon.

Isn't the concept of 18 being 'an adult' a relatively new one? I vaguely remember hearing somewhere that it was quite common in the Middle Ages for women to be married off at 12 and 13 years old, that if they were old enough to bear children (post pubescent), they were old enough to marry. (I suppose longer life expectancies has changed that in modern times.)

Myself at 12? I think I was still riding my bike and going roller skating on Friday nights but maybe I was playing myself and checking out girls already; I don't know, that was a long time ago.

I think the age of 18 as adulthood is also quite arbitrary. Ive met 17 years olds that were more mature than I was at 24, and Ive met 31 year olds that are less mature now than I was at 24.

Im not sure what my point is, just wanted to point that out.

I think a big part of this is that sex is just less and less of a taboo in society.

Driving isn't a taboo in society at all; why don't we see 12 year olds driving around all the time? Oh yeah ... WE DON'T LET THEM.

But with a car you can carry your keys with you, and that pretty much takes care of the problem. Well, unless you leave it unlocked on a hill. With sex, all required equipment is going to be present.
