I mean, I've heard that a lot of the troops who joined up post-9/11 did it for vengeance and the chance to kill them some "bad guys", but this seems a bit...what the fuck.In a disturbing report out of Georgia, prosecutors say four U.S. soliders plotted to overthrow the government and assassinate President Obama. Details remain slim about the case, but the AP's Russ Bynum says the soliders allegedly bought $87,000 worth of "guns and bomb-making materials and plotted to take over Fort Stewart, bomb targets in nearby Savannah and Washington state, as well as assassinate the president." The plot was apparently uncovered in relation to a murder case surrounding the killing of former soldier Michael Roark and his girlfriend Tiffany York in December. On Monday, Pfc. Michael Burnett, one of the accused soldiers, plead guilty to manslaughter and gang charges in the murder case. "Burnett told a Long County judge that Roark, who had just left the Army, knew of the militia group's plans and was killed because he was 'a loose end,'" reports Bynum.
As The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Jay Bookman notes, "Sometimes these things get blown out of proportion, but $87,000 in weaponry suggests otherwise. And when you’re willing to murder two people to keep the plot secret, you’re pretty serious about it." The news follows a controversial report published by Reuters' Daniel Trotta last week that the U.S. Army is battling soldiers within its ranks who enlist in the Army and Marine Corps "to acquire the skills to overthrow what some call the ZOG - the Zionist Occupation Government. Get in, get trained and get out to brace for the coming race war." At the time, Business Insider's Geoffrey Ingersoll pushed back against the report in a piece titled "Don't Believe the Report Going Around About Veterans Flocking to Right Wing Extremist Groups." The AP report doesn't say if the motivations to overthrow the government were racial or anti-semitic in nature in this case but much more details are likely to come.

The US has had a persistant problem with gangs and extremists getting or trying to get in, so I don't find this to surprising.
I did raise an eyebrow at 87K though. A fair bit for the guys to get, wonder if they had just been saving up.

At least since the switch to the All-Volunteer Force in the 70s. It's the reason you need waivers to enlist with any kind of criminal record or an "excessive" amount of tattoo work. It's probably trending up because of the high number of waivers granted during the OIF manpower crunch, and will stay that way until the scumbags filter out of the system.Aaron MkII wrote:The US has had a persistant problem with gangs and extremists getting or trying to get in, so I don't find this to surprising.
That's what I'd be most interested in too. They could have been supplementing their paychecks in a number of time-honored ways...or they could have been getting help from somebody. That's the part of this that would seriously worry me.I did raise an eyebrow at 87K though. A fair bit for the guys to get, wonder if they had just been saving up.

Aguigui was not charged in his wife's death, but Pauley told the judge her death was "highly suspicious."

Offing your wife (if he did) to get money to try and off the President...that's fucked, I'll give you that.

Reading what the prosecution says about their plot and assuming it to be on the mark, I bet their plot, as worked out in their heads, would end with them sailing into the sunset on a yacht.
If The Infinity Program were not a forum, it would be a pie-in-the-sky project.

I guess we'll never know how much of this plot was original thought and how much was influenced by various kooks in positions of power and influence describing Obama as a terrorist plotting to destroy America unless heroic patriots stop him with their guns...

The Wisconsin shooter also had extensive neo-Nazi connections in the Army.
El Moose Monstero: That would be the winning song at Eurovision. I still say the Moldovans were more fun. And that one about the Apricot Tree.
That said...it is growing on me.

Very little is currently known about his activities in the Army, other than (1) He drank (2)Got busted in rank at least once (3)got a GD. Since he was int he Army during the Clinton era of shrinking end strength, he likely wasn't covered with tattoos(which you have to get a waiver for) at that time. Nothing indicates he ahd "extensive neo-Nazi connections in the Army."
Afterwards? Sure.
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

It should be interesting to see how they treat these prisoners by comparison to Bradley Manning, as I genuinely cannot imagine how a plot to overthrow the government does not result in treason charges.
Re: US Soldiers involved in plot to "overthrow" Obama
Not a lawyer, but I don't think it is. Plotting to overthrow the government is sedition. Treason is conspiring with or working for an enemy power.Todeswind wrote:It should be interesting to see how they treat these prisoners by comparison to Bradley Manning, as I genuinely cannot imagine how a plot to overthrow the government does not result in treason charges.

What did they try to convict John Hinckley Jr. of then? Just attempted murder?Ralin wrote:Not a lawyer, but I don't think it is. Plotting to overthrow the government is sedition. For that matter. Weren't these four morons actually trying to overthrow the government? I was pretty sure that counted a treason under federal law considering that they're active members of the US military. Planning the take over of a freaking military base really ought to count.

The United States Code says wrote:Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

Whelp, guess I was wrong and should have checked my facts. My bad.

I wonder if they have HPCA accounts.
I do have to say this looks considerably more serious and planned out then the previous conspiracies that I've seen in the news, usually its a few drunk yahoos with 2-3 hunting rifles in the back. But 90,000$ or so is quite the commitment, in the same way I find a tornado to be quite the refreshing bit o' breeze.
