If you've never seen a lesbian...

Post by Kelly Antilles »

Go to a NCAA Women's basketball game. I spent the entire weekend surrounded by ACC alumni and lesbians. I honestly do not mean to be sexist when I say this, but how come gay guys are usually really cute (and I don't mean effeminate) and most lesbians are fairly not pretty?

My apologies to Marina and IB if this is offensive. I did not say all. I just noticed a huge amount.

It may simply be that the more unattractive ones tend to come out and be more upfront about it.

The lesbians I have seen are okay-ish, I did mistake one for a man though. Damn that short hair.

Hm, that's true. But does that mean only the attractive guys come out about their homosexuality?

You can see some really hot lesbians in the Gay Parade's, but you can also see some really but ugly ones.

No, he's saying that he mistook one for a man because she had short hair.

Nope, this one just looked icky to me because she had short hair as in it was practically a number 2 shaved affair. Her partner was far nicer.

If you want to see "all the colors of the rainbow" as it were, just stop by my campus. ;)

There's a little for everyone. Very little for the females seeking males, however. Available straight men are apparently a rare commodity over here. As a matter of fact, I think I'm the only one left on campus, but don't tell anyone! If word got out, there could very well be a feeding frenzy!

Every October is "Coming Out Month", which reaches a crescendo with the annual Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween, following the various cross-dress cabarets and the coming out dance, which I'll not mention in any detail for the sake of our younger readers.

And now I remember the pictures of my first-year roomie in drag...guh.

Aye, I knew quite a few lesbians and bisexual girls at my old college prior to moving to uni and they were all sorted gals, though one or two had the tendency to dress bizarrely and get really short hair, not shaved like, but enough to look unattractive to men. Hey, maybe that's the reason for it.

Hotfoot: The corridor opposite me in this dorm watched the Rocky Horror Picture Show DVD once every term as part of some ritual.

I was under the impression that most lesbians looked like any other girls. At least that's how it is in my school I think. Haven't seen any strangely dressed lesbians yet.

Ah. I went to a college like that. I was in the right department too. Music. There were a few lesbians, but nowhere near as many as there were gay males.

IIRC, my campus has more bi/lesbian girls than there are bi/gay guys simply by outnumbering the guys by roughly 4:1. Of course, I've gravitated towards completely the wrong department right now, compsci.

Edit: Oh, and Valdemar, this is more of a school-wide thing, usually organized by someone in the drama department. Auditions are held, there are rehersals, and then...the big night. I'm not much one for Rocky Horror though...

That was the ratio at our campus as well. However, being in Music, I was stuck over in the music building all day, so the only ones I saw were there. I was lucky enough to find a straight guy in the school of music and marry him.

No, the alumni house was behind the President's house.

So I suppose the names "Titsworth" and "McCracken" don't ring any bells either?

Most people never forget Titsworth, though the Crack house is memorable as well...
Just seemed weird. Thought you might have attended my college. :)

Now, generally, I have no problem with homosexuals. Heck, they aren't hurting me, and, as long as they don't hit on me, I am fine with it. Might not 100% agree with it, but, hey, whatever floats yer boat.

But this drag crap.

There is a difference between being a homosexual and being an insult to your dang sex.

WTF?

What is the point about dressing up like a woman?

All I know is that if my Roomie came in drag one night, I would start locking him out of the dang room...

Damien is.... Quasi-correct. For instance: I don't heavily advertise my sexuality offline (and sometimes not there either). Well, I don't own any skirts or dresses to speak of, but in the modern world you can still be feminine without doing that. I, for instance, have long hair. I'm also, though, not someone who frequents gay bars.

But as a Gay (as in gay male) friend of mine once commented, one time he stumbled into a gay bar he frequented on ladies' night, accidently - And thought it was a trucker's convention. "So much flannel" was the phrase he used, I believe. Sigh, shudder. That isn't me. Moreover, there is a definite generation gap between women who worked for homosexual rights and those who are reaping some of the more basic benefits thereof. That's in style, not appearence, but the two do go together to an extent. In fact, that may be a fair bit of it.

Now, I'll admit to having gotten along just fine in sojourns in various far away places - Like, Wyoming - but part of that was precisely fitting in, I think. So... Hrmm.

I think, yes, it's a variety of factors. Garh. I doubt that helped at all. But I'm just saying it's probably not an "I'm ugly so I'll really advertise my lesbianism to drive men away for that reason and not because I'm ugly" thing. One thing, of course, is that more mannish - not necessarily less attractive though I suppose that depends on the definition - lesbians will - ref the "to much flannel" - accentuate that to a degree whilst toning down their feminity. And that is a generalization, of course, so expect it to fail, but it does explain some of it.

There is a culture of rebellion running through the appearence side - the idea of creating a distinctive homosexual culture, or even more particularly a lesbian feminist ideal - and that has an additional influence.

Hrmm. Well, I hope that's enough thoughts and possibilities for ya, Kelly. This could probably be pondered for rather a long time... Remember that any issue like this generally gets devisive.
