Quebec police are on the hunt for a sticky-fingered thief after millions of dollars of maple syrup vanished from a Quebec warehouse.

The theft was discovered during a routine inventory check last week at the St-Louis-de-Blandford warehouse, where the syrup is being held temporarily. The Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, which is responsible for the global strategic maple syrup reserve, initially kept the news quiet, hoping it would help police solve the crime quickly.

About 10 million pounds of syrup was stored at the site, at a value of more than $30-million.

Anne-Marie Granger Godbout, executive director of the federation, said the organization is still trying to determine how much is missing and declined to offer an estimate. But a spokesman from the Sureté du Québec said the loss was significant.

“We know that it’s millions of dollars that was stolen,” said Sergeant Richard Gagné. “It’s a very large amount.”

All of the maple syrup inventories are fully insured, according to the federation, so there will be no loss to producers.

Ms. Granger Godbout said the theft shouldn’t put the global supply of maple syrup at risk, but warned it could allow the thief to undercut legitimate producers. The federation represents about 10,000 maple syrup producers in Quebec. “Obviously those people stole the maple syrup to sell it somewhere,” she said. “If it’s a big volume, it could be very harmful for the maple syrup industry. The companies that are working in this industry will have to compete with some company that didn’t pay for the maple syrup.”

Quebec produces between 70 and 80 per cent of the world’s maple syrup, with the bulk of export sales taking place in the United States, according to the federation.

The warehouse where the theft occured was a temporary location, and the federation was preparing to move the now-stolen maple syrup to a new location.

Sylvain Charlebois, who researches food policy at the University of Guelph, said any disruption in the maple syrup supply could damage hard-earned gains the industry has made in global markets. The federation has been working particularly hard to build a market for the product in Asia, where it’s less well known. “If they’re not concerned, they should be,” he said of the federation. “This is such a fragile industry, and any loss on the supply side could be devastating.”

He said it’s very difficult to trace and track maple syrup, so catching an illegitimate seller could be a significant challenge. “It is going to be problematic, one way or the other, whether it’s to sell through proper channels or dealing with the black market,” he said.

Ms. Granger Godbout said the organization is still determining just how much syrup went missing. “It’s a very long process ... we have to weigh every barrel to know the exact quantity.”

But she said there’s no need to worry about finding enough of the treat at grocery stores and farmers’ markets. “We still have enough maple syrup. There will be no shortage,” she said.

I know such things are real, but I couldn;t help but chuckle at this part:

TORONTO | Fri Aug 31, 2012 4:08pm EDT

(Reuters) - Thieves in the Canadian province of Quebec may have pulled off the sweetest heist of all time, siphoning off a reservoir of maple syrup from a warehouse and cleverly covering up their caper to evade detection, an industry group said on Friday.

The warehouse in rural Quebec held more than C$30 million ($30.4 million) worth of maple syrup, a whopping 10 million pounds of the amber pancake topping.

It was not clear exactly how much of the sweet stuff was taken in the heist, which occurred at some point over the last few days and was uncovered during a routine inventory check.

"We don't know yet how much is missing - we do know it is significant," said Anne-Marie Granger Godbout, executive director of the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers.

Numerous barrels in the warehouse were emptied of their sticky contents. The remaining barrels need to be weighed and tested to ensure the syrup inside had not been tampered with.

The robbers "were wise enough, they tried to hide their crime," said Granger Godbout. "We just want to make sure we know how much is missing and how much is still there."

The warehouse, some 160 kilometers (100 miles) northeast of Montreal, is one of many locations where Quebec's maple syrup is temporarily stored ahead of sale and distribution.

The agency believes the syrup was taken to be sold on the black market. Quebec's provincial police force is investigating the robbery.

With Quebec's 2012 harvest expected to top 96 million pounds, the province produces some 75 percent of the global supply of maple syrup, made from the sap of maple trees.

All the syrup held by the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers is insured and the agency maintains a stockpile of syrup that it likens to a "global strategic reserve," according to a press release.

"I can assure you there will be no shortage in maple syrup," said Granger Godbout.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. Have you seen what that stuff goes for in the souvenir shops in Niagara?

I don't appreciate y'all laughing at my country's very serious misfortune. How would you Americans like it if someone mocked y'alls strategic petroleum reserves? I don't even know what Poland or the UK produce of value that requires a strategic reserve, so I decline to offer examples for those states.

I think every country on Earth that's not a complete shithole maintains a strategic reserve of fuels, lubricants, food, medical supplies and the like. And I'm not joking, stolen maple syrup will be easy to sell since it's not exactly suspicious merchandise.

I think the nearest equivalent in Poland would probably be vodka, and I'll lay any money you care to name that they do have a strategic reserve of that. Buggered if I know what ours is, though.

Canada produces around 80% of the global supply followed by the US which produces most of the remainder.

Given that it was being stored in a warehouse, the most likely scenario I can think of would be forged paperwork, getting it loaded onto trucks and then just driving it out. It's still a huge quantity of the stuff to be stolen though.

I still feel like this isn't being treated as seriously as it should. That's a significant amount of maple syrup, and it may affect global maple syrup prices significantly. I only pray that it wasn't all 30 million litres, because that's the worst case right now.

Yes, actually. Some of the biggest heists were done based on nothing but manipulation and disguise.

It's been said one can get into almost any place by looking as if you are supposed to be there, and that's likely what happened. Of course inside help is incredibly useful, but it's not a chemical weapons depot ; I'd be seriously shocked if the employees at that warehouse treated their job even halfway as seriously as, say, armed bank guards...

So, on a wild guess, I'd say they just appeared legitimate and drove off with the maple syrup a couple trucks at a time, and nobody bothered to verify the paperwork for a long time because hey, it's just maple syrup, who the hell would try and steal it?

If it's one of the nation's primary exports, then hell yes it's a strategic resource.

If it's an export, wouldn't that mean this should be a corporations problem? "Maple Syrup Inc. warehouse robbed, major insurance claim fight, stocks drop!" makes more sense than global strategic reserves to me. Or does the government sell/give the syrup to the companies if there is a crop failure?

Primary export = key source of foreign exchange = serious negative effect on the economy if there's a major production shortfall.

Dude, its pancake syrup and it was insured. Nobody is going to starve to death. Canada is not going to collapse. They'll just have to use a little more butter.

An update:
Yahoo wrote:Canadian police seize 600 barrels of missing maple syrup
By Eric Pfeiffer, Yahoo! News | The Sideshow – 8 hrs ago

Breakfast fans, rest assured: Your French toast and pancake toppings are a little safer this morning.

Police have made their first major breakthrough in the great maple syrup heist of 2012, after Canadian authorities seized 600 barrels of maple syrup that was allegedly stolen from a Quebec facility.

In September, the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers reported that a large percentage of its reserve appeared to be missing after conducting a routine inventory inspection at the province's global strategic reserve site at St-Louis-de-Blandford.

Quebec produces 80 percent of the world's commercial supply of maple syrup.

A local exporter said police approached him and said they intended to search his business property in an investigation related to the missing syrup. "They came in and said we're taking everything, there wasn't much I could do," said Etienne St-Pierre, who told The Associated Press he initially thought the officers were joking.

St-Pierre said the syrup awaiting export on his property was delivered by his usual group of suppliers.

In the meantime, the AP reports that the confiscated 600 barrels of syrup are being escorted aboard a "heavily guarded" convoy of 16 trailer-trucks as they make their way back to the strategic reserve in Quebec.

"(The convoy's) under police protection going somewhere in Quebec," said Yvon Poitras, the general manager of the New Brunswick Maple Syrup Association.

Unless each of those barrels holds 7.5 tons of syrup, no the SMS isn't safe. Remember, they stole ten MILLION pounds of the stuff. This is just a drop.
