I think you mistyped or misread. She wasn't lauding $2/hr wages. She was lauding $2/day wages. Which is just fucking insane.
Indeed, somehow I saw "hour" instead of "day". I guess because I would never think anyone would seriously $2/day wages in a first-world country.
Zixinus wrote:No, I understood that. That is indeed a miserable wage but it depends to who. If it is in a country where the cost of living is so low (ok, probably because they don't have to pay the water bill because there is no indoor plumbing and they don't have much else) that the above wage is actually good, then it is a different matter.
This is in Australia.

Mega rich disconnected from reality and uncaring about the masses. I've never heard of it before!

At least Clive Palmer is funny. He's also using this to bolster his own image, which is double lol.

If they were on minimm wage then their salary will be replaced with a similar amount of government benefits, maintaining spending on products and services. Enrollment in food stamp, disability, medicaid and similar programs is at all-time highs in the US and still growing rapidly.

NO, US GOVERNMENT BENEFITS FOR THE UNEMPLOYED ARE NOT SIMILAR TO MINIMUM WAGE!!!!

An able bodied adult is entitled to food stamps ONLY! (Trust me, I speak from recent experience). That's an allowance for FOOD ONLY. Nothing for housing. Nothing for medical care. Not even a few dollars for soap, water, or deodorant. MOST unemployed adults are not disabled, therefore, they get JUST food stamps. That is it.

IF you qualify for "unemployment insurance" - but no means guaranteed, vast swathes of workers do not qualify - you get approximately 2/3 of your wages, up to a certain point, after which it's a flat dollar amount.

NO, the unemployed in the US do not have "similar" income on benefits than they did while working.

Fraudulent use of food stamps to buy non-food products is pervasive.
Oh, really? That used to be true, not so easy to do any more. Not impossible, but given that the US jobless have little income other than foodstamps, and they want to keep eating, that actually doesn't leave a hell of a lot of "disposable" foodstamp resoures to convert.

Mind you, I'm not going to turn someone in for a little chicanery to obtain the funds for soap and toothpaste, but I somehow doubt that's the level of fraud you're referring to.
I refuse to call this a tragedy of the commons because if you genuinely believe that failure to use government force to make people to work more hours than necessary is a tragedy then your moral system is completely screwed up.
The system is screwed up not because because are forced to work more hours than "necessary", but because there is no safety net for surplus workers.
Incomes can be stagnant but if everything gets cheaper (through automation) people are still better off.
Yeah, nice idea - problem is that incomes have been falling, not stagnant.

At least it's nice of you to publicly admit being a sociopath.

You know there are many (dare I say, most) rich people who are also good people, who earned their money honestly without any dirty tricks. Deciding that someone should be beaten just because they have more money than, say, you, makes you a pretty shitty person in addition to a dangerous one. You should probably be locked up.

We can start with people like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, who contribute greatly to charity. Its a travesty the attacks some of the pseudoscience fringe anti -vaxxer crowd launch against Gate's charity.

Gina Rinehart though has some questionable ethics, considering how he tried to divest her father's widow (and her step mother) out of her father's will, and her actions in trying to deny her own children control of a fund set up in their name by her father (their grandfather).

I think that the point of the scene was the most greedy filthy rich got dragged out and beaten in the streets as opposed to say Morgan Freeman.

Why would she do this? I've heard this but I have no idea why someone like her would do this.

Who knows. I can make some guesses.

With her step mother, she had a feud with her. Her father marrying his much younger Filipino maid, that might rub some people the wrong way and might make her see the step mother as a money grubber (even though she got a small fraction compared to Gina).

As for her children, perhaps she is what we would call a control freak. Only she knows why she is doing that.
