Am I missing something? Von Braun and Rudolph - the two I mentioned - were both involved in the Saturn V. To say nothing of the contribution to rocket theory the likes of von Braun and other of his sort proivided.

You are missing that fgalkin said Armstrong's ships. Namely, the CSM and the Lunar Module, which were built by NAA and Grumman respectively. Yes, von Braun had a huge impact on the Saturn-V, but I felt like nitpicking. It was meant to be a facetious remark anyway.

Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."

You said it was a flawed idea. In what way is it flawed. Are you disputing that the Apollo project was dependent on Saturn-Vs? The fact that von Braun didn't make the Lunar module is irrelevant to the fact that Armstrong was standing on the shoulders of Nazis when he went to the Moon.

Have a very nice day.

I know that. Like I said, it was meant to be a facetious remark.

Does it really matter? I doubt Armstrong had much say in who was designing the rocket.

Oh, come on. By that standard, Magellan stood on the shoulders of murderers and tyrants, too. Complaining that one of the pioneers of rocket theory was a Nazi and therefore the space program is horrible is kind of ridiculous ; What, we should've not used the mathematical models because of principle?

I deliberately chose fame as the standard, because "greatness" of an explorer is such an incredibly vague term we could argue it in circles for months and not come to any truly satisfying standard. For example, danger: in an Apollo spacecraft, death was virtually certain if you stayed out there too long, because you needed machines to even breathe. And one ill-aimed solar flare would've fried you.

It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.
