Gillard just spent 15 minutes calling out Abbott's hypocrisy

The video is in there. It's a pity that the new will edit it down to a few seconds here and there as people really should watch the whole thing.

When Julia Bishop gets confused feelings and can't deathstare anymore and Joe Hockey see's the writing on the wall and turns off his smug face after a few minutes... It's awesome.

How about that, Australian politics actually delivering something worthwhile.

There was no part of that I didn't enjoy.

I loved watching Tony Abbott try not to give the cameras a reaction shot.

Where exactly has this Julia Gilliard been hiding? This used to be the norm years ago.

I will watch it when I get home. However Tony Abbott is a misogynist. The guy who tried to ban an abortion drug for women. A guy who says the best gift his daughters can give is their virginity while he himself admits to not doing the same thing in his youth. Say it ain't so.

Also lets add homophobic and racist fuckwit to the list while we are at it.

The entirety is available on youtube if anyone is worried about it being edited down. Abbott got pwned. But a lot of Liberals are bigots, and I am not afraid to say it and I have gotten into arguments with some posters in the past trying to defend the Liberals.

Too bad dogwhistle racism, social conservatism and economic hypocrisy wins votes I guess? I don't think this will make much difference to voting results.

Didn't she lose that political fight as he stepped down or did I misread the morning news?

Yeah, lots of people are calling it election winning. I harbour no such faith in STRAYAN society.

Personally, I found it rather embarrassing. If there is a time to catalogue Tony Abbott's failings at such length, it is not in defence of another misogynist. If she'd helped get rid of Slipper and only then hit Abbott with both barrels, it would be easier to take her accusations of hypocrisy more seriously.

That's... pretty reductionist. I knew nothing about the politics, but I saw no defense of Slipper at all there. Because there was none. Attacking someone for hypocritically attacking a third party does not automatically mean you defend said third party, particularly not if you heavily imply the aforementioned third party is a bastard.

You don't count calls for his sacking to be deferred until the actual investigation into his actions is completed as a defense? Because she did mention that loud and clear, along with the other stuff she hit Abbott with. It sure seems like a defense of his position as speaker to me.

It could be that, or it could be a "please wait until we have an open-and-shut case" type of request. But yeah, I overlooked that part, so my bad.

He's a horrible wanker who said bad things about women in private, I believe. To be honest I don't care; Gillard just used Abbott's high horse posturing to dredge up his caveman bullshit. She may however be unaware that to his supporters, his comments are probably quite acceptable.

And good thing too, but it doesn't affect how futile it is to highlight how much of a bigoted retard Abbott is when that's his selling point. :V

Its just funny to see him try to take the moral high ground when he's such a hilarious dinosaur.

It looks like a case of you lost the battle but still won the war to be honest.

The reason the government wanted Slipper into the Speaker's chair was to take away one vote from the opposition (IIRC the speaker only votes when its a tie, and Slipper is a Liberal parliamentarian). Since the ALPs hold is precarious (they formed government with 3 independents who are naturally conservative leaning) such a move made strategic sense.

For Slipper presumably he gets a bigger paycheck and prestige associated with the position. While public pressure forced him to resign, he now votes as an independent and is predicted to vote with the government on most issues, which he did as an independent just now. I believe the government loses another vote as one of their members is now the speaker. So at the end of the day the opposition still has a net loss of one vote, the government has a net gain / loss of zero votes, just as the ALP intended when they convinced Slipper to be the Speaker.

Slipper quite notoriously loved the symbolic elements of the role. It's why he brought back the robe.

e: However I disagree with Stark that this will have no effect on political discourse. It's huge news. If nothing else it's making people talk about sexism, even if some of the people who are talking about it are total retrogrades. I mean, if Abbott's appeal was the fact that he's a misogynistic dinosaur, I don't think his wife talking about how he's totally cool with women you guys would have been a thing. It's actually pretty clear to me that this kind of impression is one the Liberals don't want the public to have.

Which is what it was, a defense of his position as speaker, not a defense of Slipper or his actions. We really really do not want a situation where a parliament has precedent to dismiss a speaker based on allegations of misconduct because it makes it far to easy for the majority to neuter any speaker they find inconvenient. Labors motives may not be entirely pure in refusing to vote to have him removed but it was the correct thing to do from the legal standpoint. The only real thing to do was wait for the investigation to complete and privately indicate that Slipper should stand down, which I understand Windsor and Wilkie eventually had to do.

As for election winning, not likely. It wont affect the rusted on Abbott supporters or the die hard labor/greens voters, nothing will at this point. Combined with the way they handled the Jones incident I think it's a good indicator someone in the labor party is actually thinking about political strategy for a change but I doubt it will do much more than patch up any lasting damage from the Craig Thomson thing earlier on. A few more displays like this won't win the election, it's the coalitions to loose and they still have a lot of leeway although they have made some pretty poor decisions in the last couple of weeks, (whoever let Abbott get away with using the line 'died of shame' the other day was clearly hired by the libs/nats after being fired by labor, that was dumb as hell) but they might go some way to keeping Gillard in the leadership after the election.

They should label that 15mins of WIN! Man, even though my electoral division has been ALP since 1980, I'm gonna do my postal vote from the UK this next election if I'm not home.
