Felix Baumgartner jumps from 23 miles up!

Post by Hawkwings »

Just a few minutes ago, Felix Baumgartner jumped fro a balloon 23 miles up and safely descended to the ground. Official confirmation of his attempt to break the sound barrier on the way down is still on its way, but he has broken at least two other records today. Live press conference will be here: http://www.youtube.com/redbull

Very awesome, 128,000ft, well above the planned ceiling and near two thirds the cruising height of a typical jet aircraft above the previous record.

He missed the freefall time record, though, looked like he panicked and pulled the chute early after his visor fogged up during descent.

Well, better he pull the 'chute too early than too late....

Excellent! Really, it's about time someone tried to break that record. Given the prep these guys did, and how much better suit technology is these days, I expected he'd be alright, but still there's always some relief when this sort of thing is safely completed.

In scale terms, had this jump been on a classroom globe, it would have started from 1mm above the surface.

I think he may have deployed his parachute early to leave Kittinger one record to his name. It's be pretty classy of him if he did.

I think it more likely he deployed a bit early because his visor was fogged and it's better to pull early than late.

Kittinger was heavily mentoring him and has expressed that he desired his records be broken, indeed, helping to train Baumgartner to do just that. I don't think Kittinger would have minded him breaking all his records.
