Yep. Broomstick missed a reason for weight loss problems:

6) Physical disability. It's not genetic, it's not a drug reaction, it just makes it hard to work out or do much.

Still- since I have no business prying into a stranger's medical history to find out if they have problems with weight loss, it seems pretty stupid to say that people who are heavy 'should be ashamed of themselves' for allowing themselves to be seen in public while overweight.

There used to be a similar attitude toward disabled people of all types: if you were stuck to a wheelchair there was almost an expectation that you would remain a recluse, because there was by God something wrong with you. We've moved past that, we should move past that for people who are overweight for medical reasons...

...And that leaves people who are overweight for other reasons. Like just plain not exercising enough. For these people, the only argument I can see is that public ridicule will make them lose weight for their own good. And I don't buy that, because as far as I can tell it normally doesn't work that way.

Ridiculing people is not an effective way to make them change their behavior in good ways; it makes them defensive, angry, and bitter. Stressed-out and unhappy people will default to doing whatever would normally make them happy, even if it's a deeply self-destructive lifestyle choice.

That's the real reason not to say "you shouldn't be seen in public, fatty" to someone who's overweight. It does not work on them, and promoting that attitude won't work to set good examples of positive behavior to other people, either.

Well, honestly Flagg, I'm happy the gastric bypass worked out for you, but hey, c'mon, surgically rerouting your intestines is a bit drastic. Maybe the newsanchor hasn't reached that point yet? I'm glad we have gastric bypass for those who need it, but I'd rather people not hurry (or be hurried) into taking that step.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.- Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, which sums up my feelings regarding the lawsuit discussed here.

Yeah I would never advocate it for someone that thin anyway. She's large, not a land-whale despite my hyperbole.
