Partial crane collapse on a NYC construction site. Very dangerous situation.

Re: DC Prepares for Mega-storm
Yeah you'd close up the harbor mouth and Hells Gate to do that. But no, no need for such radical action.. not yet anyway. Such barriers would be in much wider and deeper water to do such a thing (so way more money involved), and it would almost certainly be cheaper to raise up a few feet of seawall around the lower lying areas of the city. This would also would also bypass the ecological problems of a barrier, even a barrier which is normally open will greatly reduce water exchange and make NYC harbor even more of a dead zone.Flagg wrote: IIRC the opening of the harbor and the mouth of one of the rivers. It would be a tidal dam like the one on the Thames.
The flooding the Thames barrier was meant to stop was much worse then anything being talked about here, ~15-20ft kind of storm surge, which would preclude realistic riverbank barriers in the city because of how wide they have to be. In NYC in contrast your talking about needing to add a really high curb along the shoreline, plus maybe some more pumping stations. If sea level rises to the worst predictions, then a Thames style barrier would be required but that's decades in the future. In fact the Thames barrier itself may have to be replaced in the future, though this is as much because southern England is sinking as because sea level is rising IIRC.

Sounds like the show's starting over here, downed branches over town, a bit of flooding.
A friend says most of the streets in Gloucester are undrivable rivers now, which sounds much as always.

There's a few livestreams if anyone wants a firsthand view of the storm. Right now it doesn't really seem like much but the wind was blowing hard enough in the Bronx to shake the building earlier, heh.

Perhaps, all day it's been a pain sorting truth from rumor. The storm will hit tonight, it will hit tomorrow. It'll break on the shore a thousand miles south of us and we'll see a bit of rain but less than your average Nor'easter, like always. The East Coast will be drowned as the vengeful sea takes back all but the mountains, etc.Col. Crackpot wrote:It's Gloucester. Re: DC Prepares for Mega-storm
Winds have been steadily picking up all day today. Started this morning with 20km/h and right now it's 42km/h with 61km/h gusts. No rain at the moment but it should start any time now. Went for a quick bike ride in the afternoon and there are already a few trees down in a nearby valley. Have a few friends in the NYC and DC area and their power's flickering, don't know how much longer they'll be online.

Rain, flickers in the power. So far nothing more serious has happened to me personally.
Of course, it's supposed to only really pick up in the next six hours...

Either way, Sandy is quite a bit bigger than Irene was.
Irene in that picture extends to the eastern border of Ohio.
Sandy extends to the eastern border of Illinois, almost twice as far inland.

Well, my house lost power around 2:30 PM today according to my parents. My work lost power at around 3 PM, and I spent the remaining hour of my shift putting away dishes and watching the generators turn on, get overdrawn, shut off, and get restarted.

Wind has definitely picked up, rain's actually stopped for the moment. No flickering lights here, and it's been a while since I heard a 911 call.

Watching the live feed from Time Square is rather fun.. Place is mostly deserted, but NY seems not be getting hit too hard, lots of people just milling around, saw a few dancing in the rain

I'm on the 34th floor of my building, facing NE on the Hudson River. The building is shaking quite noticeably.Dalton wrote:I'm on the 39th floor of the Hilton tonight. There was an ominous creaking.
From my vantage point, I can see that the street below is almost completely flooded. The Palisades Medical Center is entirely surrounded by water. I've seen them evacuate some of the patients, the rest, I guess, are staying put. I've hard reports of some nasty flooding all the way up along the NJ shore of the Hudson up to Fort Lee.
There were some lightning strikes and a fire further down. I've seen one take down the power for the neighboring buildings, but all I've had was flickers. The cable went out for a few hours, so no TV or Internet, but it's back now.
Also, the cops here are worthless- they were driving just past the flooded area as cars were getting in the water, getting stuck, etc, without even bothering to stop. They didn't try cordon it off at all until much much later.
The high tide is coming, so the worst of the flooding is yet to come. If it reaches my building, I will lose power.
Have a very nice day.

While not in the storm personally, I did read that the New York subway got completely flooded. Looks like New York will be utter chaos for the coming days until they can repair that damage.
