A New Hampshire lawyer associated with an anti-gay Christian defense group was arrested on federal child pornography charges after allegedly taking a teenager to Canada where she reportedly convinced the girl to engage in sexual activity and let it be filmed.

Lisa Biron, a Manchester, N.H., lawyer associated with the Christian litigation group, Alliance Defending Freedom, was arrested by FBI agents on Friday morning on charges of transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, possession of child pornography and five counts of sexual exploitation of children, according to the Concord Monitor.

Federal prosecutors said Biron transported a teen girl from Manchester to Ontario, Canada, on May 25 and coerced her into engaging in sexual acts with another person that were then recorded, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.

According to the Concord Monitor, prosecutor Helen Fitzgibbon made the case for Biron to be held without bond because other juveniles have been subjected to Biron’s sexual activity and drug use; witnesses have testified to seeing Biron in possession of ecstasy, marijuana and cocaine; and Biron texted a friend saying she may flee to Cuba.

Police had been investigating Biron since Sept. 29 after receiving a tip she had child pornography on her computer, according to the Union Leader.

She was first arrested in Manchester last month on charges of possessing child pornography, according to Boston.com. Police said the videos and photos on Biron's computer depicted a teen girl. Federal authorities were alerted when police determined the porn was manufactured out of state.

The Alliance Defending Freedom, the anti-gay group Biron is associated with, is "a group of reactionary Christian attorneys lawyers pressing litigation to curb reproductive rights and block the freedom to marry," according to Queerty.

ADF was founded in 1994 by more than 30 prominent Christian leaders, including Focus on the Family’s James Dobson and American Family Association’s Donald Wildmon, among others, Queerty reports. The group has been fighting against gay rights for over 18 years.

ADR recently made news for sending a memo to state officials in Maine, Maryland, and Washington, urging them to discriminate against gay couples by refusing to grant marriage licenses, Think Progress previously reported.

I've got a few guesses
- It's illegal to transport a minor for the purposes of sex, even if the sex would be legal in the place you take them to.
- She's going to be prosecuted for the child porn on her computer in the US, then extradited to Canada.
- Going overseas and having sex with a minor if illegal for citizens of the US, even if it's legal in the destination country* and the minor is a citizen of that country.

*I have no reason to suspect that it was legal under Canadian law, though I do not know Canada's age of consent nor the age of the teenager.

No need for extradition to Canadaat all if the teen was an American. Since it is a criminal act by an American citizen on another American citizen, US has jurisdiction no matter where in the world it happens. That's not necessarily spelled out that directly in any specific lawbook, but it is reliant on one of the core principles basically built in all western legal traditions and has to do with the definitions of state, sovereignty and jurisdiction as well as citizenship.

Self-loathing homosexuals frequently take up charges against gay rights. It's nothing new or surprising at all. Also, "gay rights" encompasses both men and women, so your "distinction" there is a little weird.

It happens all the time. Just because it's legal in the country you're visiting doesn't mean you won't get busted for it once you're back in America.

I thought so. I was just asking because it looked like some people were asking why this person could get in trouble in the USA when the crime was committed on foreign soil. But now that I read it again it was just Aaron asking if the person would be prosecuted in two countries.

Or war. I recall reading years ago about how among some Afghan tribes for example, mothers encourage their sons to go forth and rape women from other tribes. And to cut their sister's throat if she's raped. And if you go outside of sex, the most physically damaging forms of female genital mutilation (like cutting off the clitoris) are usually performed by older women on girls; not by men. I don't see any reason to think that this case is about trying to "destroy" the girl though.

A quick look on Wikipedia says both Canada and New Hampshire set the age of consent at 16, but with exceptions up to the age of 18 for "exploitative" or "in loco parentis" situations.

At this point I'd say it's possible that Biron is not guilty of wrongdoing, if all the charges cascaded from the legal fact that a 17 year old can consent to sex but not sexy photos. If not, yeah, she's a scumbag.

I think she's a scumbag no matter what, given the overwhelming hypocrisy of the thing, but that's just me.
