Maybe he took degrees that are a lot easier than you might think, or at least require good bullshit skills but little in the way of logic. Who knows? Either way, he says remarkably stupid things on a regular basis, and they aren't just incidents of "misspeaking", because he defends them afterwards.
There's this guy I know, brilliant scientist in his field (Physics). Creationist. He got into an argument in a Comp-Sci class with the Professor over the concept of Evolutionary Algorithms. His position was that the theory evolution is flawed and therefore the entire concept behind the algorithm is flawed. Thankfully the professor shot him down rather quickly with "you can believe whatever you want, but for the purposes of this class, we will operate in reality".

Despite this, he is exceptionally skilled at the research he does. Just because one is brilliant at one thing they are good at, does not mean they have a right to spout their opinion on something they are clearly ignorant of. I think Bill-O suffers from the same problem. According to Wikipedia, His Masters was in Public Administration. His thesis was on how mandatory drug rehabilitation reduces crime, something that we can easily see fit into his worldview. I personally think he does the same thing as the South Park brothers, in that he researches and studies the hell out of things that interest him or fit with his preconceived notions, and ignores the rest.
Brains!

Kind of a random tangent, but Bill-O taught high school English for a few years at a Catholic High School in Florida, where my mother happened to go. She claims he was a pretty good teacher, all things considered. *shrug*

He kind of dances around it, hints at it, but never goes right at it with the quotes to ask what the fuck kind of racist scumbag actually thinks that it's important to preserve the "white male Christian power structure".
Which is why I dislike John Stewart. Like every other mindless middle media turd he cares more about getting access to these people than he does about exposing the cunts that they are. Unless they are people who don't really matter like Tucker Carlson or Jim Cramer. And all the while these clowns can point to their appearences on his show and say "hey, I do his show, I'm not afraid of the evil liberals!"
Echoing again the Stewart is comedian line, and like it or not, O Reilly provides good fodder for comedy and isn't that despicable to comedians.

Granted, Stewart keeps going off the rails, such as the Death panel interview, the whole New York firemen debacle but let's face it, outside of that New York firemen thing, his entries into the political arena is just as biased and self serving as any other pundit.

I think Stewart's main objective is to, you know, be a comedian. However, when he does see something he can do something about-the First Responders thing is the biggest, but there have been others (Tucker Carlson, Jim Kramer, etc), he goes for it.
