Mabus might finally have saved his own neck on the naming scandals. Been 67 years, two months and sixteen days since CV-6 returned home to New York City and the fate of the most inglorious scrapping in US naval history that waited her.

Now the Navy needs to tell Congress to fuck off when Congress tries introducing a bill to rename CVN-80.

Good on them to have CVN-80 carry the name. As long as they don't fuck with it. CVN-65 served well.

Apparently Bill Shatner was set to attend the ceremony, but cancelled.

It's Jodan, not Jordan. If you can't quote it right, I will mock you.

She was so old USS Constitution was older in commissioned service. The navy started building her and cruiser Long Beach as soon as USS Nautilus proved nuclear power at sea. I think the oldest commissioned ship is now USS Blue Ridge, commissioned in 1970, and intended to last as long as 70 years, though she's also a much rebuilt command ship and doesn't do that much. All CVNs are now being expected to last 50 years in service.

From the Navy Blog about decommissioning CVN-65 and announcing the name of CVN-80

Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

The blog is is wrong on the reactor count, as the Soviet nuclear powered icebreaker Lenin the first nuclear powered surface ship ever launched and commissioned, had three reactors as built. Triple shaft too. Minor issues concerning core meltdowns and coolant leaks led to her being rebuilt in the late 1960s with two new ones.
