I think the thing that is being confused is publishing a lie (which is covered as defamation in some cases), and lying to get information.

I do not believe that lying (a key component of undercover investigations) should be banned.
Suffering from the diminishing marginal utility of wealth.

There's "knowingly publishing a harmful falsehood." There's "accidentally publishing a harmful falsehood." There's "deceiving someone to gather important information." There's "deceiving someone to gather useless or privacy-breaking information." There's "lying in ways that cause collateral damage." There's "making harmful shit up." There's "making harmless shit up." And that doesn't even begin to cover it...

This is the part that gets complicated- drawing the lines between what it is and is not legal for journalists to say.
