It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.

Re: Newt Gingrich supports idea of moon colony
A moon colony might be more feasible if NASA is able to pull off that warp drive they are working on, assuming that it could be used in small enough bursts to cover such small distances. Because otherwise supporting that colony is a huge hurdle.
It took the Apollo missions about 3 days to make the trip one-way. That's not a whole lot of time in the grand scheme of things, but considering how inhospitable the moon is, it's more than enough time to kill off everyone there if something were to go wrong. Moon bases are in an entirely different ballpark than any other colonization attempt humanity has ever made, because even the Antarctic base doesn't have to worry about generating its own breathable air. If it were possible to cut the trip down to the span of hours, minutes, or even seconds, it'd be much more feasible to get supplies and relief there in an emergency.

Oh, I do, I do. Trust me when I say it's an even funnier word on Skype.
