I mean their lawyer has already made one public statement that is patently nonsense. Hmm. Then again I suppose the fact that TEPCO will be forced to again downplay the effects of radiation while admitting to lying about the state of the plant might be win win.
I think this lawsuit will force TEPCO to actually admit to the truth of their actions. The sailors have every right to be concerned over their health due to the bad faith actions by TEPCO. If they are healthy, so much the better. But TEPCO should have to prove their "innocence" while also disclosing all of their dirty laundry in the process.
"If the facts are on your side, pound on the facts. If the law is on your side, pound on the law. If neither is on your side, pound on the table."

"The captain claimed our people violated a 4,000 year old treaty forbidding us to develop hyperspace technology. Extermination of our planet was the consequence. The subject did not survive interrogation."

I think an American suit for damages is probably not the most effective way to hold anyone responsible. It will almost certainly, however, increase anti-nuclear feeling rather than anti-bad management and corruption feeling.

Not only should they be laughed out of court but they seem to have given the world a good reason not to accept US humanitarian aid in future.

We don't even need to go with the football field one. Let's go with this one.
It goes on to charge that through its conduct, TEPCO "rendered the Plaintiffs infirm and poisoned their bodies. The Plaintiffs must now endure a lifetime of radiation poisoning and suffering which could have and should have been avoided."
Does this sound plausible to you? And if it is, what does that say about what authorities have been trying to assure us about the effects of radiation? This isn't just about TEPCO lying about the state of the plant than, this includes the US Navy feeding sailors bullshit about "exposure equivalent to a month" and the like.

Very few people are going to see and outcome where TEPCO is blamed for destroying the reputation of nuclear power. What they are going to see is that a nuclear accident will result in effects so terrible and long reaching, nuclear power is irredeemable.
