In the Chicago area WYCC TV broadcasts news from a number of non-US sources free. I know NHK is a regular on the channel (they provided extra coverage during the earthquake/tsunami/Fukushima mess) but there are a half dozen others. Contrary to rumor, it is quite possible for Americans to get non-American viewpoints on events... if they can be bothered to change the TV channel. Admittedly, for some that is a steep barrier.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.- Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, which sums up my feelings regarding the lawsuit discussed here.

It's not just changing the channel, it's also finding it. With Time Warner NYC for instance, Current TV occupied channel 1XX while HD network channels are around the 700's range. So unless someone is really bored, probably not many people will channel surf through the premium, duplicates, sports, music, etc stuff to get down there.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Reminds me that the LinkTV website has several of its programs available in full for free, such as LinkAsia, Mosaic World News, and Bridge to Iran.
