Where are the updates on catastrophes?

Post by Broomstick »

This thread is inspired the recent news of a roof collapse at the old Chernobyl plant site. Fortunately, it caused no hazard (well, none except the usual for a falling roof) and probably as a result of that the news wasn't in the headlines but more or less buried on the various media sites. A few articles mentioned that yet another protective structure is being built over the mess, but really, we don't hear much about Chernobyl these days, do we?

This got me to wondering about other disasters in recent history that made big, splashy headlines at the time but have now faded into obscurity. This incidents surely have had on-going effects for those affected. I'm curious about

1) That pink toxic sludge flood in Eastern Europe a few years back - how is the clean-up going?
2) How are the rebuilding efforts post-Boxing Day Tsunami going?
3) How are the post-Katrina New Orleans rebuilding efforts going?

And probably more once I have more time to think about them. Anyone else have questions about some newsworthy disaster than now seems gone from the news?

I'm always wondering how the BP spill cleanup is progressing, and how badly the local ecology and businesses were affected in the long term. We seem to hear only reports about sporadic reperations by BP in the media but I haven't heard anything else.

Not the biggest disaster, but Joplin is recovering nicely from our tornado back in 2011. Most of the damage has been repaired, and we are getting a new high school and hospital up (still a few years to finish though).

Not much with the Red Sludge. Finest parts of the cleanup never been attempted by the government so all the dredged hazmat from the river Marcal has been sitting on the riverbank last summer and the sides of Route 8 around Devecser had a distinct reddish color. Otherwise a hugeass dam has been built around the stricken reservoir rumoredly by the new "royal" construction company Közgép, with materials bought from the PM's father's mining business. The residents of Kolontár are practically abandoned, in their barely habitable wasteland, but because they are poor people the government ignored them and went on to wreck the economy further, gutting education, stealing people's money while trying to cement their hold on power and building soccer stadiums.

Also, they made more then a few proof that they are unable to tie their own shoelaces without embezzling government money to their oligarch friends.
