I'd recommend Michael Bay's The Island. It is excellent commentary on brainwashing, sheltering, and religious fundamentalism. I wrote an analysis on this, but it's quite horribly written compared to how I write now. I'd love a discussion on this maligned director's best work.
I think Blade Runner is worthy of nomination, as it is the original Dark future science fiction film. It brings up the topics of what exactly it means to be human, gives us beautiful visuals, and shows us a way the world could have gone.
Has anyone here seen The Wave ? I really recommend it, as it is a great commentary on how insidious Fascism can be and how easily it can rise in a fertile ground.

I've watched "Immortal" Very interesting movie, strange mix of CGI and real life actors mixed together. A bit surrealistic in places, but fascinating to watch.

What did you think of the fact that the more people where "augmented" with Eugenics' technology (the Mayor, the Inspector, etc...), with all those iLivers, iLungs, etc..., the more obvious the CGI was ; whereas those who were just human, or simply themselves (Nikopol, The Girl, Horus, JohnJohn), used no CGI, preferring makeup & costumes or non-obvious CGI ?

When I first watched the film I thought the changes were just cost based. Making CGI people is very expensive after all. However the more the movie goes on, them ore you realize they are spending ALOT on CGI, sets, backgrounds, spaceships, etc.
The only time you ever see any CGI that really looks "fake" is on people, and the more augments someone has, often, the more "fake" they look almost to the point of cartoonish.
My thought is that, in the movie being Pure is important. I won't say why... But being pure, and being true are big themes. I take it as showing the more augmented someone is, the less Pure they are, and so they are show as being "Less Real".

I also nominate The Man From Earth. It's a film I like to show to others and have discussions about. Eternity, and what one would do with it. It's a film in which there is almost no visual variation, as it all takes place in one log cabin in the mountains, and focuses primarily on dialogue, which makes it a bit different from all the other films on this list.
[Film] The Good, the Bad, and the Weird Inspired by the classic western about a bounty hunter, thief, and gangster looking for treasure. Being made and set in Chinese Manchuria though gives it a unique taste and direction. It's all around a great western not set in the American west. Currently available on Netflix.
It's been a while since this thread has been touched, and I was waiting on the revival of the 'Analyze some shit' thread, but people have seem to have lost interest. So, to try and get this going again. I'd like to add Cloud Atlas to this. It's a work of science fiction, has themes that make you think about life, love, the cycles of humanity, and is visually striking.
