Jesse Jackson Jr-Another Chicago Politician Facing Charges

Post by Broomstick »

Actually, two of them, but Sandra Jackson is not well known outside the Chicago area, so it's Jesse Jr. who is capturing headlines. I went with the Al-Jazeera article because, first of all, I'm sort of tickled this asshole's downfall has gone international and secondly because it's pretty well written:
Jesse Jackson Jr pleads guilty to graft
Former congressman admits he misused $750,000 in campaign funds to "finance extravagant lifestyle".

Jesse Jackson Jr, a former US congressman and the son of a prominent civil rights leader, has pleaded guilty to criminal charges that he misused $750,000 in campaign funds by spending it on personal items during the last seven years.

Jackson faces up to five years in prison and a fine under the terms of his deal with prosecutors. His wife, Sandra Jackson, also pleaded guilty on Wednesday to charges of filing false joint federal income tax returns.

Sandra Jackson, who was a member of the Chicago city council until her resignation last month, admitted that from 2006 to 2012 she failed to report $600,000 in income that she and her husband earned from 2005 to 2011.

The list of items purchased with campaign funds includes a $43,350 gold-plated men's Rolex watch and nearly $10,000 worth of children's furniture. His wife spent $5,150 on fur capes and parkas, the court documents said. The tab for personal expenditures at restaurants, nightclubs and lounges cost ran to more than $60,000.

Under the plea deal, Jackson must forfeit $750,000, plus tens of thousands of dollars' worth of memorabilia items and furs.

Before entering the plea, Jesse Jackson told the judge that he had "never been more clear in my life" in his decision to plead guilty. He added later, "Sir, for years I lived in my campaign," and said he used money from the campaign for personal use.

'Tragic' case

US attorney Ronald Machen called the case "nothing short of tragic".

"Jesse Jackson Jr. entered public life with unlimited potential, but squandered his bright future by engaging in a self-destructive course of conduct that was staggering in both degree and scope," Machen said.

"For seven years, Mr Jackson betrayed the very people he inspired by stealing their campaign donations to finance his extravagant lifestyle.''

Jackson had been a Democratic congressman from Illinois from 1995 until he resigned last November, and was considered a bright political figure with a shot at higher office. His father, Jesse Jackson, is a prominent civil rights campaigner.

Jackson and his wife are both scheduled to be sentenced this summer, and remain free until then.
If you're interested in a breakdown of what they spent $750,000 on this link has a list if you scroll down.

I've loathed and despised the Jackson family for decades. Jackson Sr. exploited the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. to bring attention to himself and help launch his career. He fancied himself a black version of Joe Kennedy (another nasty man in US politics) which is why he was so furious when Obama became the first black president instead of himself or his son. It's been known for a long time the whole family is dirty as fuck and corrupt as hell, maybe doing something here or there for a constituent but basically sucking off their district and political funds, as demonstrated here. Back when Jesse Jr. exiled himself to the Mayo clinic there was speculation that he would use the excuse of mental illness to mitigate legal charges although the prosecution says that won't cut it because the abuse was so long and, in their words "so well thought out". Jesse Jr. was involved with the Blagoevich attempt to sell Obama's old senate seat, which hasn't even been brought up yet in court but most likely will come to light eventually.

I say stick him in the "governor's wing" of the pen (so named because of how goddamned many Illinois governors have been incarcerated there) along with all the other bipedal pieces of shit that pass for politicians around here. There's still a lot of house cleaning to be done in this area but some of the big names are finally going down.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.- Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, which sums up my feelings regarding the lawsuit discussed here.

Ridiculous. I love the city, but its politics are an absolute nightmare. I wonder if an honest politician can even get a foot in the door of sweet home Chicago's machine. I'd actually consider running for a public office some day, just to try and do some good, but the threat is that you end up looking like dog food after the system gets ahold of you.

Leaving the "honest politician" jokes aside, are you serious Cov and how did President Obama get through?

You mean the guy who campaigned on the promise of transparency, but refuses to even define the limits to his power to assassinate US citizens without trial?

If you mean in local politics, he actually wasn't that high up before he made a jump from State Senate to Presidential Hopeful... actually no, I'm wrong, it looks like he was part of the Senate. How did I miss that? I even went to several of his speaking events before he ran for President...

Seems I'm wrong, good catch Hav.

I'd probably still say he got chewed up into dog food as part of the procedure himself, it wasn't an easy affair, but I didn't mean literally chopped up and thrown into the big green river. Luckily the guy is just incredibly eloquent, and smart, and he didn't have to stay in the legislature of the city too long. 11ish years total it seems, which is not a short tenure but it was like 2 terms as a state senator and 1 as senator. He also had "Dreams of my Father" published in 1995, before he was elected to office for the first time, so that certainly helped. I think he's actually given slightly less exciting speeches as President than some of the small ones I heard in the area before, but I'm sure that's a preaching to the choir effect, being able to really rally a small group on just the thing they wanted to hear, etc.

Overall, I think you've got a point. I'm not sure how well he would have dented the system if he had been stuck there, but that's certainly not unique. Had he become Mayor he may have had some better shots at reforming the system, but President is clearly a better gig.

Its easy to get cynical about the local politics though. It's a blatantly corrupt culture, to the point that the alderman schenanigans are considered just part of doing business in the town, and it is a far more functional form of corruption than most so it sometimes gets a pass, but we have a Governor's Wing for a reason and it gets frustrating to de-facto trust no candidates ever.

Or if the system would have dented him. I'd like to think the President is incorruptible, but we all know otherwise.

Note that this isn't saying the President is corrupt, but Chicago politics being what it is, it isn't a given that he wouldn't become so if he spent a career in it.

There is a difference between working within a corrupt system, taking advantage of a corrupt system and becoming corrupt.
President Obama like all local politicos had to kiss quite a few backsides to get his first seat and keep a lot of other people happy. However there's a difference between "keeping people happy" and "accepting cash payments".

We legalized bribery a long time ago in this country it's just the low rent small scale fry that get caught. And besides which once you make President you make bank. If you want an example compare President Clinton's net worth on entering office to today. 160 million dollar increase in 12 years is not a bad haul. President Obama should pull down even greater numbers on the speaking circuit.

*Edit
To extend the point about legalized bribery. If a Chicago developer sends a lobbyist to a Chicago politico and tells him that voting for X will increase jobs that's legal. If that lobbyist is a former politico himself who can talk about the good old days when that Chicago developer used to hand out 5000$ checks to his favorite politicos come re-election time... that's still legal. If the lobbyist tells both stories one after the other while nudging the politician and waggling his eyebrows it's still.... legal. And a month later when the bill is signed into law when the lobbyist comes back with 5000$ checks for all the good little representatives and senators it's still legal.
