A test of Thrawn's skills.

As a test of Thrawn's skills in combat he is sent back in time and given the command of a LA class submarine. He has years to take all the time needed to undertake whatever training he feels he needs given to him be the best submariners in the US. At the end of his training he has to go up against Marko Ramius and the Red October.

Both submarines are isolated within a 100 mile wide box of open ocean. Marko has three areas within this box that he can reach with Red October that are launch points. He only has to reach two of these points during the scenario to win it. Thrawn knows where two of the launch points are but has no clue where the other is. Marko is also free to engage Thrawn's fast attack boat if he feels a opportunity exists to sink it and Thrawn is under orders to shoot to kill.

Can Thrawn adapt well enough to a totally unknown environment to match the Vilnius Schoolmaster or does he get deep sixed?

If, as per the scenario, he gets all the training he wants, Thrawn will blow Ramius out of the water. He'll a strategic and tactical genius. Marko is good but it's mostly just a matter of greater experience. With someone that knows and can predict his tricks against him Ramius is fish food. As shown in Hunt he's ewasy enough to figure out. A CIA desk jockey could do it with minimal bio information could do it after all.

Unless Thawn has one of the first half dozen LA's built, he has a advantage in stealth, firepower, fire control, sensors, speed and maneuverability. Thawn sends the Red October to the bottom.

He has a Flight I. Should be fair since that is the same that the Dallas was.

Lets just give him Dallas. The first couple had some differances in electronics I'm told. But still, the basic LA has a huge number of advantages, and Thawns going to win, even if he is more suited to fleet command.

So he merely has a rough parity instead of advantage. Thrawn will still win, he's got the skill to take out Ramius.
