Is this the episode where Captain Janeway, in her infiniate wisdom, decides to willingly let the ships one and only doctor/surgeon leave so he may pursue a music career with those aliens?

And he's not even a person; he's just a stupid hologram. Janeway should have turned him off, left orbit and then brought him back online sometime during the next week.

That would have been the smart thing to do. Since when has Janeway ever made a smart decision?

The doctor gets even worse when he starts crusading for equal rights for "photonic lifeforms." The doctor isnt a lifeform, hes a computer program.

And that is another thing; we get this lame EMH on Voyayager, he becomes sentient and then BLAMMO, the Delta Quadrant is full of holograms! We even hear about "Photonic Life Forms!"

Not only that, but we have already seen them on Enterprise! Forget the fact that this takes place waaaayyy before Kirk and Spock, and that they never encountered any. That's great Berman & Buttmunch. Very original. Since they have never existed before, let's just flood the universe with them and pretend like we won't notice!

So why should the Doctor have any less rights than, say Data?
I am capable of rearranging the fundamental building blocks of the universe in under six seconds. I shelve physics texts under "Fiction" in my personal library! I am grasping the reigns of the universe's carriage, and every morning get up and shout "Giddy up, boy!" You may never grasp the complexities of what I do, but at least have the courtesy to feign something other than slack-jawed oblivion in my presence. I, sir, am a wizard, and I break more natural laws before breakfast than of which you are even aware!

He should have the rights. But I think it would result in dereliction of duty and desertion.

What I don't get, is why is a hologram regarded as a different artificial life form than an android! Remember TNG ep. where Data had to fight for his life? Why wouldn't those precedents carry over to holograms?
Other than it being a lame-ass plot device, of course.

I guess it all depends on how you define 'Life-form.' I would define Data as being an artifical life-form, while I would classify the Doctor as 'Artificial Intelligence'.

Data exists as an autonomous entity, while the Doctor and other holograms are dependant on two things to exist, a computer and holoprojectors. Take away the holoprojectors, and hes just a computer program.

You also need to take into acount the purpose behind the creation of the two. Data was created to be an individual, to make his own choices, etc. While the doctor was deisnged with a specific purpose in mind. In fact, most holograms we have seen were programmed with a specific purpose, and with varying degress of artifical intelligence.

Over the years, the doctor has his program expanded and new 'sub-routines' were constantly added. Aside from changing his program, the only thing that made the doctor unique from other holograms is his mobile emitter. To give all holograms equal rights, when the holograms themselves are not equal is silly.

Oh yes, the technologicaly advanvce midgets, that have a vast spacefaring trade/cultural area, that never heared of music.

No wonder they think the Doctor is a great singer.

Celine Dion would be an odd looking (even for THEM!) diva singing alien!

You've got to love that moronic plot device of having an alien species which is advanced in every other way but has one critical failing relative to humanity. Oh wait a minute, that describes EVERY FUCKING ALIEN RACE ON STAR TREK!!!

As for the Doctor and the rights of holograms, that was just an excuse to do a re-tread of the Data idea. The fact that it should have been covered by the Data precedent is obviously lost on B&B who just saw it as another opportunity to plagiarize a TNG episode.

And also when Data tried to convince them the Exocomp were sentient beings like him.

Actually, I found the Doctor to be an interesting character.

The episode in which the Doctor daydreams about stuff, amoung them painting Seven of Nine nude, is Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy. I could actually watch this one, because I found it amusing. (I take this as proof of me having a very sadisitic sense of humor.)

The "photonic life forms" are one of the stupider things out there. I recall the Bride of Choatica episode, in which they do a Flash Gordon spoof (I also found this episode amusing, which puts my sadistic humor level between 'frying-ants-with-magnifiying-glasses' and the 'laughing-while-kicking-babies-into-flaming-carwrecks' levels.) To make a long, stupid story a short, stupid story - the photonic life forms from another dimension get involved in massive war with a holographic simulation of a Ming the Merciless ripoff, and somehow get worried that the holodeck somehow would invade and conquer their own universe (Couple this with the fact they think the holodeck characters are real and the humans are fake, and you got some pretty stupid aliens.). As you already guessed, the safeties are flying off, the plot is going awry (She's a good guy! Good guys aren't supposed to die!), and photonic life forms seem to have a penchant for dressing in 1930's style clothing.

I think this was supposed to lead up to some point I was trying to make, but I forgot what it was. Anybody have any ideas?

EDIT : Fixed link.
