Klingon race names (TOS vs TNG)

Post by Darmalus »

I'm working on a bit of fan-fiction set in the Star Trek universe, and I'd like some help coming up with some names.

Now, I know the explanation is they were all one big race and it was all a stupid genetic engineering plot. That's pretty lame, so for my purposes I want to treat the smooth heads and bumpy heads as separate natural races, like skin color on earth. I figure there would logically be more than just two, but I'm just hand waving them as being to small numerically to be noticed or just sticking to their ancestral homelands and never being noticed by the interstellar community.

I would love some help coming up with Klingon sounding names for the two races. We have names like Caucasian, Hispanic, etc. and I figure they would have internal names for each other as well. Bonus points if they can translate as something meaningful. I've never been very good at languages, and I seem to be even worse at 'faking' Klingon.

Check out some of the old TOS novels that dealt with Klingons, especially The Final Reflection and How Much For Just The Planet? by John M. Ford, and The IDIC Epidemic by Jean Lorrah. All 3 novels deal with both names and honorifics and delve into some differences in the races, and The Final Reflection should be required reading for anyone interested in Klingons.

If you say they're just different races. Then how do you explain Kang, Kor and Koloth's DS9 appearance.

TOSDOC's right about those novel's being decent though. In them bumby heads are the imperial race and the others are 'fusions' (purposefully created hybrids of klingons with other races.)

Cosmetic surgery. When the revolution came your options were convert, flee or hide. People with power and wealth (Kang, Kor and Koloth) had the ability to afford quality cosmetic surgery and keep their positions. Everyone else generally got it much worse.

Yeah. Dropping that like a hot rock. Might one of those racist rumors you hear, like how Ferengi eat people.

Klingon for "Klingon" is klingonskans

Klingon for "Sick" or "ill" is vara sjuk (Vars Juk)

Perhaps the "Skarns" and the "Varsjuk" ?

I liked Chuck's suggestion that when the DS9 crew traveled back to TOS times in "Trials and Tribble-ations", Worf should have switched to the TOS Klingon makeup.

Your accent is terrible. :P

The word you're looking for is "tlhIngan." Pronunciation as well as other phrases can be found here:
