Umbrellagate

Post by Dalton »

Obama asked two Marines to hold umbrellas for him and Turkish PM Erdogan. Conservatives freak out in spittle-flecked rage that he'd have the hubris to force a Marine to violate uniform code. Justified or hysterical right wing Obama hatred?

It's either a scandal when any President does it (why? Or just have a no uniformed aide do it) or it's more Republican fun.

It is a uniform code violation if a male marine is using an umbrella in dress uniform to keep himself dry, but other laws say the marines do what the president tells them. Thanks to marine rules being silly female marines are allowed umbrellas.

Much to do about nothing.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Just curious, as much as we have a blatant example of "Hold umbrella while standing well out of way" don't we also have a clear example of "Hold umbrella in a fashion that doesn't keep self dry" anyway? Or would that just be mincing words.

I didn't know there was a specific umbrella rule for Marines. I thought the general military rule was that they could be carried as long as the umbrella was plain black and the person carrying the umbrella had his/her right hand free so he/she could still salute or return a salute.

They could at least have said that having a soldier hold an umbrella for Erdogan was... I dunno, something. But looks like they'll have to impeach Obama for that now. Hell, since it was a military code violation, they could pass him through a court martial as well, why not?

I think the point was it wasn't, because the Marines weren't covering themselves with the umbrellas. Look at how they hold them.

In Ace's image, the soldiers holding umbrellas for other presidents aren't dressed the same way. Is that relevant to the uniform code?

Except the Marine isn't holding the umbrella to keep himself dry. He's holding it for someone else. End of retarded conservahypocrit attempt at point.

After a fashion, the USMC has a similar uniform, but I do believe Bush's umbrella-holders are the US Army, where Obama had Marines do the same thing.

Actually no that's just my wording, the actual code makes no such distinction. It also specifies that for females the umbrella shall be carried in the left hand so that the user can still salute.

Huh. Alright, I see now. What's the situation of CIC order vs. UCMJ?

Your asking can the president order people to break the law? No, he cannot, and a member of the armed services of the US would be required to refuse an illegal order. Uniform code isn't part of the UCMJ.

The guys for the other presidents are in the enlisted service uniform as opposed to enlisted dress uniform, in this context it makes no difference as far as I can tell. The uniform regulations are set by the commandant of the Marine corps and may only be modified by said commandant, but they are not exactly federal law either. I wouldn't be surprised if at some point an authorization to carry umbrellas, along with attending to other unusual duties, actually was put on paper by the marine corps.

They included a president with some random civilian aid holding an umbrella in that why exactly? To be retarded and miss even the most basic part of the outrage, fake or not?

And people at Fox News keep wondering why none of the multitude of scandals they try to drum up ever stick. So many of them are about marines holding umbrellas, dijon mustard on burgers, and Kenyan birth certificate conspiracy theories that at this point Obama could practically do an authentic reenactment of the Watergate break-in and have a lot of the general public not buy the conservative media's take on it.

With a red tie and blue coat, no shoulder tabs, no arm patches, nothing on his collar and no air force emblem? Yeah that'd be called a civilian. Most of the government workers on VC-25 are civilians.

Ok, wasn't sure as the photo is blurry and IIRC AF One crew doesn't wear standard Air Force uniforms anyway.
