What do we want to see in Trek 2016/STXIII?

Post by Lilgreenman »

So it's practically a given that Trek Thirteen will come out for the 50th Anniversary, in 2016 (As a note, the fiftieth anniversary of the September 8 airing of 'The Man Trap' will be a Thursday). What do we want to see, to celebrate this venerable franchise?

As for me, I don't care what the plot is about as long as they
a) Don't bring forward any TNG stuff like Q or the Borg, and
b) Have a good old-fashioned Bones vs. Spock scene. Honestly, one of the most famous friendly rivalries in fiction, and Urban and Quinto have barely said a dozen lines to each other.

If I had to predict the movie, I'd say that they'd adapt an unproduced mirror universe based two-parter from the death throes of Enterprise, where Shatner would return as an elderly mirror-Kirk.

The Reeves-Stevenses, who had the idea for the episode, said...
"The idea was that the Tantalus field was not a disintegrator, it was a humane way of dealing with prisoners, by sending them back in time to a sealed penal colony. Enterprise (NX-01) comes upon the colony – and Tiberius [mirror-Kirk] is there. Tiberius thinks, 'Finally, a ship with a transporter – I can get back to my own universe, my own time.' He basically goes on the NX-01, gets to the transporter, sets it to go back to the mirror universe – the mirror universe doesn't exist - it hasn't been created yet. So Tiberius and Archer work together to figure out where the division point is between the universes, what point that one split off into the other. And as it turns out, Tiberius and Archer together are responsible for the creation of the mirror universe."
It seems like the sort of thing Team Abrams would love.

And, being done, thus Wall away doth go."

I want to see those warp trails become red instead of blue for no clearly explained reason, just to enjoy the inevitable nerd rage that will follow.

Also half the Klingon fleet should show up over Earth with zero warning and literally only the Enterprise to defend against them.

Seriously I'd like a continuation of "hawks in starfleet theme" that Admiral Marcus was in "Into Darkness" maybe have it so that there's 2 villains one that's UFP and another from another Alfa/Beta Quadrant power (preferbly either the Klingons or Romulans), who both are working towards war but are not allied with each other and the Enterprice must stop both of them without also starting a war in the process.
I may be an idiot, but I'm a tolerated idiot

The next film will be at the fiftieth anniversary? Then we'll almost certainly get more out of place references to the old films and series rather than doing something new.

Same thing screwed Skyfall.

God damn it.

I just want a semi-original story which isn't a hamfisted remake of any of the last 12 Star Trek movies or any of the famous TV show episodes.

I mean maybe it's close to impossible but I just hope its somewhat more original than 2009's "let's do Nemesis a little better" and 2013's "let's melt WoK and TUC together."

You're doing 'Star Trek' a priori and using the original crew to boot, you're not trying to do something original, you're redoing something that worked. And as someone going into it expecting it to suck as much if not worse than the first one, 'Into Darkness' surprised me something fierce. Yes. they took elements from TWOK and TUC, but they used them completely differently than the old movies did and they used them well. 'Into Darkness' was, to my not inconsiderable surprise, not only a thoroughly entertaining, but a thoroughly Star Trek movie. If this movie is a sign of things to come, I think I like the new Star Trek.
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

I don't think there's that much in common between Nemesis and the film in 2009. Why do you say that there is?

All I can think of is that both bad guys are bald and both have Romulan super ships that have super weapons that can destroy Earth/ the Federation. Other then that I think they are fairly different from each other.

An honest-to-god space battle that isn't a total curbstomp. Seriously, what's the point of a flasher and easier to digest Trek if you never get to see ships fight? At this point it's only the beginning of the first movie that has decent combat. It's not like they don't have the budget for it, the few seconds we got of the Vengeance firing on the Enterprise were great and visceral. Pity the ships in STID basically sat around like useless bricks for most of the movie.

What I'd really like is for this crew to get a show rather than movies. The beginning of Into Darkness was a great slice-of-life intro, seeing more like it would be great. Even after two movies I feel I barely know their characters, but getting the actors to sign up for that might be too much.

Also Chekov and Sulu to do more than just sit around filling space because the previous series had them.

The allegory of STID was one of the most satisfying parts. Make it another modern allegory. The Syrian war sounds like a good example. Say there's a small war somewhere that's threatening to spiral completely out of control, dragging everyone on every side into the middle of it if anyone so much as breathes wrong. Millions dying, calls for intervention, but intervention would cause more damage. McCoy wants to intervene, Spock dictates the logic of not, Kirk is caught in between. He now absolutely must control himself, showing his maturity as a captain. Perhaps he sacrifices the Enterprise itself in order to prevent a larger war.

I'd also like to address some consequences from the first two movies. Is trans-warp beaming still around? Is Khan's blood really a universal cure for damn near anything, or is there a catch?

Interesting thought. Maybe a modern twist on "Day of the Dove"?

Well, if they keep going with their rehash of classic Trek, the next movie will be about a killer space probe and/or time travel back to the present day.

what I want is a movie that either has real klingons or real romulans in it. Not a jumped up space miner , not a glorified border police unit.

I want to see an adversary at the level of Kang or Kor or the Romulan commander in Balance of Terror.

That does sound interesting. Until you consider how the Prime Directive affects the story.

Ugh, just something new. If they work all the Captains into the movie somehow, I will officially be done with Star Trek aside form DS9 reruns.

I'd go with the hawks as a background thing, build them up for something bigger later.

I'd like to see the Romulans and Federation gravitate towards eachother against the Klingon's but with lots of tension (old wounds from the Earth-Romulan war, etc.)

As a result of the gravitation the Klingons try to frame the RSE and UFP for attacks on one another, Kirk and the Enterprise with the help of the Romulan Commander from 'Balance of Terror' ("In another time I could have called you friend") work to clear each side of the attacks and expose the Klingons. Oh and Spock gets to shack up with the Romulan Chick from 'The Enterprise Incident'

I love the idea of making that Romulan commander an ally. It would be a beautiful and subtle reference to the Original Series and a way to do something new instead of reusing old ideas.

Edit: I just realized that post was necromancy. Sorry.

As long as they get rid of the apparent requirement to have an ubership as enemy they can do what they want.

Insurrection had the Son'a warships that at least matched if not outgunned the Big-E.
Nemesis had the Scimitar which outgunned her again.
nuTrek got a (borgified if you allow the comic) pimped out romulan mining ship that outgunned both a klingon fleet send into combat as well as a UFP fleet send to a prepared killzone.
STID got the Vengeance... big ass mofo stealth dreadnaught outgunning and nearly curbstomping the Big-E.

An antagonist with inferior ships who uses cunning and plans within plans would be a nice change of pace.

And they shouldn't have the Big-E rising out of dust or water or clouds again. That scene was nice in nuTrek but already felt overused (they did that scene twice in STID, rising from the ocean then averting the crash on earth).

How about a romulan dissidence movement that wants to aid the vulcan survivors by immigration. Even though the romulans are still seen as instigators of the Narada incident and the upper echelon / Tal'Shiar doesn't want to loose [insert McGuffin here] to the UFP because the [insert McGuffin reason here]. The Big-E is send to the negotitations, something happens and we stand at the beginning of a nice drawn out war that threatens the universe as we now it. The last part is optional.
