Holy Shit. That is not a heart attack, or if it was, he had other bad shit going on and the heart attack was the immediate cause of death. That is a symptom of an Ischemic Stroke in his left hemisphere (and not many things cause paralysis or loss of feeling on one half of the body), which, if the cause of death was a myocardial infarction, would mean he was throwing clots all over the place.

Note: I am not that kind of doctor, and wont be any kind for another 10-12 months, but I analyze bad things in order to cope.

Not to clog up the thread with idle speculation, but yeah, hemisplagia would point to an ischemic CVA but not limited to that since we don't know if it really was hemisplagia, could be anything. A profound sense of weakness is not uncommon in myocardio infarction too. Someone mentioned the spider bite earlier, you're the critter dude, would a spider bite screw with coagulation in blood? That might lend to the ischemic CVA thing. Hell, for all we know, he went into ketoacidosis from his diabetes. No way to tell.

Again, my sympathies to the family.

Like a great many things, it depends on the spider, but yeah. Spider venom evolved to basically make a smoothy out of other living things. In his area, he had Hobo Spiders, which have a venom that can cause localized tissue necrosis, specifically by way of Ischemia. If he had a clotting disorder, as I seem to remember he did...yeah. Even if he was a hemophiliac (I dont remember what if any clotting disorder he had) and was being treated for it using ongoing replacement therapy, or various medications, those medications can react to a venom (or rather, they cause the clotting factor to be used in places it need not be, with a precise effect determined by the specific medication) and he may start throwing clots.

And of course, there are the other possibilities you mention, in the event that what was actually going on is not what is described. There is no way for us to know.

He arrived there ... not too long before I did. Those days seem like forever ago ... even though they really aren't. He certainly left enough of an impression on my mind in the old ASVS days that I named a Starfleet ship for him in a crossover fanfic I wrote in 2001. Something that, as I recall, made him a uncomfortable as he thought "Witz" being a name derived from someone who might've served as a jester was entirely too non-serious a name to be sticking on a starship. Especially one commanded by Chakotay.
