Re: Yosemite Bear (Colin Witz) has passed away
My interaction with him was relatively limited, but I am still affected by his passing nonetheless. In the end, though, what can I say that hasn't been said already? RIP, and my condolences.

This is not nice I hope those who knew and loved him find peace soon.

...from what you folks are portraying, Yosemite Bear is a very good one to be a pal with.
...and I never knew him.
Rest in peace Mr. Yosemite Bear.
As an offering, since I couldn't go to a funeral all the way in another country...
I play this Filipino funeral song instead, named "Hindi kita malilimutan" (I will never forget you), and hope it reaches his ears wherever he is now.

Re: Yosemite Bear (Colin Witz) has passed away
Like a great many things, it depends on the spider, but yeah. Spider venom evolved to basically make a smoothy out of other living things. In his area, he had Hobo Spiders, which have a venom that can cause localized tissue necrosis, specifically by way of Ischemia. If he had a clotting disorder, as I seem to remember he did...yeah. Even if he was a hemophiliac (I dont remember what if any clotting disorder he had) and was being treated for it using ongoing replacement therapy, or various medications, those medications can react to a venom (or rather, they cause the clotting factor to be used in places it need not be, with a precise effect determined by the specific medication) and he may start throwing clots.Knife wrote:Not to clog up the thread with idle speculation, but yeah, hemisplagia would point to an ischemic CVA but not limited to that since we don't know if it really was hemisplagia, could be anything. A profound sense of weakness is not uncommon in myocardio infarction too. Someone mentioned the spider bite earlier, you're the critter dude, would a spider bite screw with coagulation in blood? That might lend to the ischemic CVA thing. Hell, for all we know, he went into ketoacidosis from his diabetes. No way to tell.Alyrium Denryle wrote: Holy Shit. That is not a heart attack, or if it was, he had other bad shit going on and the heart attack was the immediate cause of death. That is a symptom of an Ischemic Stroke in his left hemisphere (and not many things cause paralysis or loss of feeling on one half of the body), which, if the cause of death was a myocardial infarction, would mean he was throwing clots all over the place.
Note: I am not that kind of doctor, and wont be any kind for another 10-12 months, but I analyze bad things in order to cope.
Again, my sympathies to the family.
And of course, there are the other possibilities you mention, in the event that what was actually going on is not what is described. There is no way for us to know.

RIP Yosemite Bear. Your contributions, while not always the most coherent, helped bring levity to sometimes angry threads. You and your humor will be missed.

I merged the already existing thread about this with the global announcement thread.

I didn't know him but he seemed to always be a swell guy. RIP.
El Moose Monstero: That would be the winning song at Eurovision. I still say the Moldovans were more fun. And that one about the Apricot Tree.
That said...it is growing on me.
Thanas: It is one of those songs that kinda get stuck in your head so if you hear it several times, you actually grow to like it.
General Zod: It's the musical version of Stockholm syndrome.

I'll second this.Mr Bean wrote:I never knew Bear. I saw his posts I rarely responded but he's been around forever. And now he's not.
I wish I could say more at his passing but all I can offer is my own meager condolences to his family.
Re: Yosemite Bear (Colin Witz) has passed away
Not a person I ever directly dealt with, but I'll miss him all the same. RIP Bear, and may your slumber be a good one.

But who will post silly one-line RARs that make no sense?

And they were oh so silly.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

We never talked much and I only ever knew him from this forum, but it was always fun when we did (especially when his keyboard was wonky). I shall miss the guy.
My condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Bear.

Wow, this is terrible news. It's just a bad, weird, feeling when someone you know, even if you only know that person through seeing the posts on the internet, is gone. RIP Bear, and my condolences to your family.

Re: Yosemite Bear (Colin Witz) has passed away
He arrived there ... not too long before I did. Those days seem like forever ago ... even though they really aren't. He certainly left enough of an impression on my mind in the old ASVS days that I named a Starfleet ship for him in a crossover fanfic I wrote in 2001. Something that, as I recall, made him a uncomfortable as he thought "Witz" being a name derived from someone who might've served as a jester was entirely too non-serious a name to be sticking on a starship. Especially one commanded by Chakotay.Phil Skayhan wrote:RIP BearColin Brian Witz's first post to ASVS 6/3/00 wrote:

RIP, Colin.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

Stardestroyer.net is a family. A large and very dysfunctional family, but still family. And we lost a member of that family.
