New Doctor Who to be unveiled on Sunday at 7pm BST

Post by Hillary »

Who will it be???http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-23531724
The new star of Doctor Who will be revealed in a special live programme on Sunday, the BBC has announced.

The half-hour show, presented by Zoe Ball, will feature an interview with the new lead, as well as 11th Doctor Matt Smith and executive producer Steven Moffat.

"The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who's taking over the Tardis," Moffat said.

"For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve."

Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor, is on BBC One at 7pm on 4 August.

According to the official announcement, Ball "will unveil the 12th Doctor in the first ever interview in front of a live studio audience set against the backdrop of a swirling vortex, amongst Daleks and the Tardis".

Smith, who has played the Time Lord since 2010, announced in June that he would be bowing out in this year's Christmas special.

The announcement sparked much speculation about who might take over, with Peter Capaldi, Ben Daniels, Rory Kinnear and Ben Whishaw among the bookies' favourites.

Ben Stephenson, BBC drama controller, said: "Amongst all the speculation and betting, there has been lots of fun and intrigue at work as we've been using the codename Houdini as a decoy.

"It's the biggest secret in showbiz, even those working with the new Doctor on other projects at the moment have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation."

As someone on Facebook pointed out, there was an announcement that there will be an announcement saying that the 12th Doctor's actor will be announced on Sunday. Humbug.

Frankly I don't much care who it is as long as he/she/it is written well.
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."

In other words as long as Moffat leaves.

Despite my dislike of a lot of the writing these days, I'm looking forward to finding out who it is.

Stupid title. New Doctor to be announced not a new Doctor who. Actor being replaced, not the show.

The fact that everybody even halfway interested can decipher their meaning doesn't change the fact that it IS a stupid title, especially as a simple 'New Doctor unveiled' or 'New Doctor unveiled on/for Doctor Who' would have worked much better while 'New Doctor Who' at least implies the possibility of them redoing the series again.

He was called "Doctor Who" early on anyway.

I'm reasonably certain that only ever happened in s1 of nuWho, and not for long in that.
EDIT: Huh. Seems like he WAS referred to as Doctor Who to the end of s1, so my bad.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT. You guys are the most nitpicky fucking whiners ever.

Besides the fact that in pretty much EVERY episode the say "Doctor who", only complete fucking idiots aren't going to understand the fucking title and only the lamest people on the planet are going to complain and go on about it.

I kinda hope it's someone not quite as "geeky", I'd like to see them play around with like a Brad Pitty, Clive Oweny Doctor.
I also would like to see a return of the Doctor's "daughter" to go along with the new Doctor Who.

I strongly agree with this. She's another time lord with a connection to the Doctor and she's never even mentioned. It's a huge example of wasted potential in the series.

For that matter, they should make her a companion. A non-human companion would add variety. And the way the Doctor would interact with his daughter would probably be different from how he would interact with a typical companion. And it would mean we could get a break from the annoying romance with companions plots.

I'd like to see him find Susan again. He promised to come back, but he hasn't made it yet (outside of books etc that I tend to avoid).

He does say something like "my family's all gone" but we've seen ways to hide (the Master) and the Doctor's been wrong before.

Yeah having the overprotective father thing going would be a nice change and it would probably flip the dynamic where she was the one rushing off and the Doctor freaking out and worried.

It also might cause the Doctor to control his dark side so that he can be a better role model for his daughter (and not lose her trust and respect).

Of course, she'd probably find out about what he did during the Time War. I can imagine a scene where she asks him what happened to the other Time Lords and he has to tell his daughter he murdered them. If well written, that could be one of the most heart-breaking scenes in Doctor Who's history.

And the Doctor could be a mentor and try to teach her to be better than the old Time Lords. I can see that being a very fulfilling experience for the Doctor.

Like I said: wasted potential. Or to put it another way, screw you Moffat. You could have done this and you gave us another human girl who flirts with the Doctor. Hack.

In theory having a daughter character might change the dynamic... but the writing for Doctor Who has been bad enough it would be entirely likely they turned it into a really creepy incest situation when you have the Doctor looking as old as his daughter and their childish writing.
The actress that played the daughter has quit to be a stay at home mum according to IMDB so that trailing story thread created by Moffat is a dead end.

As for the new Doctor: I will be astounded if they pick someone that is older than 40.
I fully expect the new Doctor to be 20 - 30 and be another wannabe funny guy.

Why would it be incestuous? The Doctor and his daughter looking like they're the same age doesn't mean it's incestuous, and I doubt even Moffat is stupid enough to make the Doctor incestuous.

As for the actress being retired, they can cast someone else. It wouldn't be the first time that happened.

But you're probably right about the next Doctor being young.

Trying to do a father / daughter relationship whilst pulling off the wacky episode of the week shit is not going to bode well and so far the series has banked on the constant flirty comedy routine.
I seriously doubt the ability of Doctor Who to handle a more complex relationship without causing another mess like River, Amy and Rory.

Well... there is always the hope they finally make good on the idea of the Doctor being a woman.
