Has anyone on this board been converted from a christian to an atheist?

Gradually, as of 16 years ago, I still considered myself christian. Worked my way through it as I matured.

Yeah, I was. If you're asking if this board was responsible for that conversion, no.

I was converted to being tolerant of the later versions of Star Trek, to only liking a few episodes and seeing the rest for the crap they are.

Not the same, but a conversion none the less.

Yes. I was raised under Christian beliefs, though my parents were never terribly strict about it. At one point, I stopped reading MAD magazine because it had references to the devil in it, and I was afraid that such contact would result in my going to hell.

It should be noted, however, that at roughly the same time I was very interested in the occult and the supernatural, and that for a time I was afraid of falling asleep in a room with a mirror, for fear of talking in my sleep (a little convoluted, but think candyman).

The seeds of doubt, however, were with me from a very early age. They just needed time to grow. I gradually began describing myself as agnostic, sat on fence for a few years, and by the time I started college, I was a full-grown Atheist. ;)

While this board wasn't a part of that process, Mike's site did have some influence when I was riding the fence in High School.

Although I was not converted by the board, it has helped to stop me from slipping back into the grip of christianity.

It's been a bumpy ride for me.

Well, I was brought up on christianity, I went to an christian intermediate and high school. I stopped being christian and became a goth for a while, then agnostic for about a year, then, I finally became Atheist.

I converted from christianity to athiesm (perhaps agnosticism, not sure), then back again. This board had nothing to do with it as far as I know.

I was raised a liberal protestant christian and we went to church occasionally, but now that I look back I was pretty much a deist for most of my life and in recent years I had been a fluctuating agnostic up untill last year. Thats when I started reading Mike's essays as well as reading and talking in the Science and Logic forum. That was the final wake up call which greatly helped me in laying to rest any doubts I had before. I now consider myself a Humanist Athiest.

For the switch from agnostism to atheism, yes, this board and site was mostly responsible.

I became an atheist well before I ever found out about SD.net around when I was ~12 years old.

However, I lost my faith much earlier than that.

"How in the hell is that possible?" you ask?

Simply put, when I was ~10 years old, I was really into all that consipiracy crap on all the channels. Alien abductions, cattle mutiliations, the chupacabra. etc etc.

Well one of those etc. is near death experiences and I took that as proof of the validity of God. The thing is, I told myself that w/o this "evidence" I would stop believing in God because without it, God has as much evidence as Santa Clause

So while watching the Discovery channel one day, near death experiences were blasted to bits by the show I was watching (hallucination due to lack of oxygen to the brain or something like that).

And at that moment I became an atheist.

To a degree, yes.

My mother's side of my family is seriously Fundie as far as christianity goes, and reading this board provided a badly needed counterpoint to that line of thinking. Definitely helped me make my decision on the issue a bit more reflectively, which I generally like.
