As I was watching ROTJ the other day, a thought occured to me....in the final moments of Luke's duel with Palpatine and Vader, was it Palpatines slow, torturous electrocution of Luke that prompted Vader to turn on him?
Think about it....Say palpatine just simply offed Luke's head with a lightsaber while Vader was recuperating from the near-death blow from Skywalker. Would Vader have strenuosly protested? Or would he have simply lamented Luke's death for a while, and fallen back into line as he as always done? If you think about it, Palpatine's force lightning attacks gave Vader the opportunity reflect on his course of action, even if for brief moments. Vader had just been defeated by Skywalker in the duel, so he would have been more inclined to side with his son than in previous situations. He had time to reflect, and given that time, he decided to turn against the Emperor and crush him once and for all.
So, Palpatine's unbridled agression against skywalker gave Vader the time to decide his fateful course of action. If Palpatine had decided to quickly end Luke, Vader wouldn't have necessarily had time to decide to renounce his dark side past, and Vader might have decided to remain allied with Palpatine. So, in the end Palpatine, through his prolonged agression against luke, inadvertently brought balance to the force by forcing Vader to decide between light and dark once and for all.

Of course Palpy played a part in Anakins balancing of the Force, but the fact of the matter is that its Anakin who deals the blow that restores balance.
Technically, if we are to say Palpy brings balance, then so does Shmi, and Watto, and Qui-Gon, and Obi-Wan, and Padme, and Yoda (the whole Jedi Council, really), and most anyone else who helped guide him/changed his life in a major way.

Although good theory, it brings up the question:
Was it destined to happen that way or destiny doesn't exist?
