Terminator gets rebooted in 2015

Post by tezunegari »

Though Arnie will also be back...

Depending on how you feel about the idea, the new take on Terminator is now either promised or threatened, because Paramount and production companies Skydance Productions and Annapurna Pictures have now set a June 26, 2015 release date for what is currently just called Terminator.

Yes, just when you thought 2015 couldn’t get any more crowded, along comes another big title, assuming, of course, everything goes smoothly in the manufacturing stage.

As some have already assumed, the press release makes the companies’ plan clear: this is intended as a reboot of the franchise and will be the first part of a hoped-for trilogy. But despite the reworking, Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back in some capacity, even if the release doesn’t specify what that might be (and, in truth, only mentions him as the star of the original run).

And just what does this mean for The Legend Of Conan, which sees the Austrian Oak returning to one of his other iconic characters? Producer Fredrik Malmberg isn’t worried, even though this new Terminator news would seem to conflict with Conan’s planned schedule. "We are still developing,” he told Empire. “Arnold is excited and one good thing doesn't take away the other. Scheduling production around major stars is happening all the time."

Avatar’s Laeta Kalogridis and Drive Angry’s Patrick Lussier have been at work fashioning a Terminator script and the next step will be to find a director willing to step into James Cameron’s shoes. Speaking of which, everyone is in a hurry to get the new movies made before the rights to the franchise revert back to the creator of the whole thing…

[...]
Oh boy... the rebootmania continues. I hope they save the franchise after Salvation ripped out its heart.

On the one hand, meh
On the other hand, maybe we get a return to form. Simple movie, killer robot from the future... Sarah Conner, people not understanding and wide spread devastation.

Don't believe it. The franchise is too big for that. Too much "we need more awesome special effects" and "we can't just re-do the lines of the original, we need to be clever with it".

And most of all, there will be too much money pumped into it to allow for any kind of inventive creativity.

OTOH, there will also be a new TV series helmed by former T:SCC writers Ahley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (who you might also recognize from Andromeda, Thor, X-Men First class and Fringe).

It could be good, it could be terrible, I'll go and see it either way.

Although, I would love it if they went in this direction:

It'll never happen I know, but it would be awesome if it did :D
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."

This will be shit, without fail.

Attempts to make any contribution to the Terminator franchise after T2 have went nowhere and now they want to erase it all and start over just to ensure they can keep the rights ?
Yeah, I'm not feeling much hope for this being anything but a lame re-telling like Spiderman with flashy effects and some "modernisation", not to mention a children friendly movie because no way are you going to be seeing a Terminator making a hole in a punk's lungs.

T3 wasn't really an attempt to contribute to the franchise. Almost the entire second half of Terminator 2 was about the protagonists refusing to let Judgement Day happen. It ended with the T-800 committing suicide for no other reason than to stop Judgement Day from happening. Unless you were going to do a "prequel" in the pre-change timeline that should have been the end of it. Instead Terminator 3 declared "No, Judgement Day happens anyway, and the T-800 killed himself for nothing".

Those things didn't ruin Christopher Nolan's Batman films.

And why would you want them to copy the first film? What would be the point? You can just watch the first film if that's what you want.

Edit: However, the timing may be bad. 2015 is going to be full of science fiction and fantasy films. I'd delay it until 2016 so there's less competition.

I'd watch it. Because everyone's forgetting that even a bad movie about robot android's hunting down targets is a fun movie to watch when you turn your mind off.

You underestimate a bad writer's ability to undermine a good premise.

For example: make John Connor so irritating that we're rooting for the murderbot.

You say that like I wasn't rooting for the murderbot in T3 for that very reason but still not enjoying the movie. The action was just fun. 8)

They're re-doing WarGames? What's the damn point? That film stands well enough on it's own and a modern version would make it a lot harder to rationalise the "one lone hacker accidentally starts WW£" premise.

It'd be funny if they used the same computer Broderick used for the remake. :)

Funny and accurate, since the mainframe would be the exact same. Now the plot point is he has to find a TRS-80 (Whatever it was) to hack the defense mainframe since everything else is to smart to be so dumb.

The problem is that if they stopped Judgment Day, John Connor should have been erased from existence (similar to how Marty McFly was almost erased from existence in Back to the Future). In T3, John actually says that, "He might not even exist" if he actually stopped Judgment Day.

In an alternate ending to T2, it shows John growing up to be a United States Senator when Judgement Day never arrives. So he definitely continued to exist.

Only according to Back to the Future. And Back to the Future's approach is inherently self-contradictory. That's fine if it works for the sake of an otherwise great story. It's not fine if you're using it to undermine the fact that one of your strongest characters gave up his life to stop the apocalypse.

It should be noted that Kyle Reese did the same thing in the previous movie; the final act had Kyle and Sarah going to Sunnyvale to destroy Cyberdyne systems, which was then a small manufacturing company.

Also, the possibility that John Connor would be erased from existence if Judgement Day was prevented would have added plenty of drama and tension. Do we sacrifice one boy to save billions of people?

I would like a Terminator movie that actually ditches the time travel so they can tell a consistent story. However, that only resulted in giving us T4 which ended up being a poor action flick mess and TSCC which ended up being a melodramatic waste.
