Example of computer illiteracy?

Post by Shinova »

Someone (again, I won't reveal any bit about who) said that he backs up downloaded files every time they hit 650 megs (he uses kazaa) and that he defragments frequently. He has windows 2000. On NTFS. And he seems to think that when he's doing something else while downloading, the following happens:

Part of downloaded Kazaa file gets placed,
Data from whatever he's using gets placed,
Then another part of Kazaa

He seems to believe that this somehow screws up his hard drive, in that the portions of the files are mixed up, and that one should do nothing when one's downloading. And this is Windows 2000, on NTFS.

My exasperation, if taken physical form, could destroy a planet right now.

Whatever, consider this a rant.

Aye. I've tried to "educate" him, but apparently, from what I witnessed, he took it as a cue to restate his position again. I tried a second time, and he restated his position again. Apparently he thinks I have no clue as to what he's talking about when I have full clue of both what he's talking about and that he's wrong. But he doesn't know it.

He's an idiot. Yes, fragmentation will take place, but it is exceedingly unlikely to cause any issues. Windows 2000 is designed for multitasking!

Hey, Phongn, what's up with you and double posts lately? Is this a software glitch, a server problem, or something else entirely? You're not normally like this, and you're clearly not a newb. Is something wrong that I can help with?

If he refuses to learn, then let him suffer by his own stupidity. Sometimes learning has to be painful. :P

Oy indeed...even I know better than that. My comp's been running for a year without being able to defrag or be physically shut off without pulling the plug, and it still runs fine 99.99% of the time.

The board appears to be acting sluggishly as of late; the two browsers I've used today (Safari 0.6 [OS X 10.2] and Mozilla 1.3 [RedHat Linux 8]) seem to timeout waiting for a response and thus they resubmit the data once or twice - hence the double or triple posts I've been having intermittantly. :(

Sorry to increase your workload.

My Mom (who asked me this before and didn't believe me) asked my friend who is a computer science major if you could still watch cable TV while your cable modem is on. I shit you not.

My mother is rather computer illiterate. One of the things she does, if she's reading something on a computer you're using and wants you to scroll down, is say "go up", because what's on-screen goes up when you scroll down. Quite annoying. I just scroll up when she says that. She has also, when wanting to find something, instead of using a search engine, typed it in like an address, ie tropical birds.com. She also tends to have problems with pop ups/banner ads, like taking the ones that say something about your connection not being good seriously, or being fooled by false close buttons. These are the only examples I can remember at the moment, but there are plenty more.

Normally all this wouldn't be much of a problem, but her apparent inability to learn better is bothersome.
