Post by une »

Does anyone have the Lucas quote from forward of Splinter of the Mind's Eye?

I'm in a debate with a trekkie, and need that quote to prove that the EU is an actual part of continuity.

George Lucas wrote:It wasn't long after I began writing Star Warsthat I realized the story was more than a single film could hold. As the saga of the Skywalkers and Jedi Knights unfolded, I began to see it as a tale that could take at last nine films to tell- three trilogies- and I realized, in making my way through the back story and after story, that was really setting out to write the middle story.

After Star Wars was released, it became apparent that my story- however many films it took to tell- was only one of thousands that could be told about the characters who inhabit it's galaxy. But these were not stories tthat I was destined to tell. Instead they would spring from the imagination of other writers, inspired by the glimpse of a galaxy that Star Wars provided. Today it is an amazing, if unexpected, legacy of Star Wars that so many gifted writers are contributing new stories to the Saga. This legacy began with Splinter of the Mind's Eye, published less than a year after the release of Star Wars. Written by Alan Dean Foster, a well known and talented science-fiction author, Splinter was promoted as "further adventure" of Luke Skywalker. It hit bookstores just as I was preparing to write my own "further adventure" of Luke, in the form of a script called The Empire Strikes Back.

It seems only fitting, after all these years, that Splinter would be republished as I prepare once again to write anither further adventure set a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

(signed George Lucas.
It's also interesting to not the nine movie, three trilogies part. Especially since this was before the prequels and indeed, before RotJ.

I remember reading somewhere that he ending up compacting the last trilogy into ROTJ for some reason, perhaps so he could concentrate on the prequels.

Wow. That pretty well destroys Mr. Anderson's bullshit "EU isn't part of the SW story." Lucas is pretty well saying that the EU is considered a part of continuity, AND his story. Bye-bye, DarkStar.

But seriously, one need only look at the Essential Guides to realize that the EU is, indeed, part of coninuity.

I noticed, buckaroo.

Anyone know if he mentions this piece on his webpage? I don't recall him using it in any of the debates.

Worth it. But I get images of Ned burning Homers proof of god's nonexistence.

As do I. I think it a worthless gesture.

Besides which, Anderson's already monitoring this site quite closely. That's why everyone's SOOOO scared of his coming after us intellectually.   He probably already knows.

It's not dated on the book but it's pre-RotJ. Since I bought that years before the prequels and he mentioned he was writing a new book. Not to mention there's that pesky nine movies thing.

What's the copyright on the book? That sets a latest possible date.

I'd look it up but I don't have the book at college with me. I'm back from Spring Break now so I no longer have access. And like I said, it's Pre-RotJ.

Q) How is it that you were one of the first writers to cover the Star Wars universe and 20 years later the "universe" is being continued in book form? What are your feelings on being one of the first to establish pieces of it?

A) I was contacted in 1975 by Lucas' representatives to do the novelization of the first Star Wars film, plus an original sequel. Strange to see it still going stronger than ever. As to my "feelings on being one of the first to establish pieces of it", those who participate in history do not think of it as such. It's just what they happen to be doing at the time (wonder if Napoleon felt the same way?)
Q) "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" took place between "Star Wars: A New Hope" and "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back". Did you read the script/story of "Empire" when writing "Splinter" ?

A) As far as I know, Empire was no more than a snow glint in Lucas's eye when I was writing Splinter. The fact that Splinter fits after-the-fact as well as it does into the arching storyline of the saga is a delightful coincidence.
Pretty much sets it up as written between 1975 and 1980

It's not the date of the quote that's important... it's the fact that it establishes Lucas's attitude of the EU. Right now, Darkstar's primary piece of evidence is an interview where Lucas calls the EU a "parallel universe". My counter to that argument has been pointing out that Lucas also mentions that the "parallel universe" also "intrude between the movies".

This establishes that Lucas had, prior to that interview, already considered the EU to be part of his story, and lends credence to my explanation that Lucas only considers the parts of the EU that contradict the movies to be from a "parallel universe".

In short, my explanation fits the facts; Darkstar's does not. Of course, that's not the first time that's happened.

There's also the fact that in that quote, Lucas explicitly defines "his universe" (the canon films) as "a select period of time" and NOT in the Trek sense of the word of "separate reality" like RSA wants it to mean.

RSA's mission to get the EU thrown out is all so he can dismiss things like Ep 2 ICS and the BDZ. However, even if we humor his asnine interpretation of Lucas' quote, we can still arguably use all the tech in the EU in debates anyways. Consider this--in the Trek parallel universes, the parallel Federations (even the evil one from 'Mirror, Mirror') all had identical technology. Therefore, even IF the EU takes place in a different reality from the canon SW films, their abilities in the EU still count!
