It seems "intelligent design" (ie. the Book of Genesis) may find it's way into the school curriculum in Georgia. Not content with adding stickers to science textbooks saying "evolution is only a theory and should be considered critically" they are now looking to give creationism and evolution equal time. Is it just me or does it seem like evolution is working in retrograde in parts of this country?[/url]

You know what? I say let 'em teach it. Hell, let them teach that the earth is flat, too. Let them teach that certain foods are evil and unless they spend every freaking waking moment with a Bible in one hand and a rosary in the other, they're gonna die and burn. I'm sure it'll cause some serious trouble in the world that I'm not thinking about right now, but for me it'll be dandy.
Because I live in a completely different country than the people who have the lack of sense necessary to push this through, and as far as I'm concerned, if their country dissolves into a pool of uneducated dolts, it means that I'll have a better damn job than they will, and can lock myself behind a myriad of technology and laugh at them from the safety of the internet on my gigantic computer.

What do you expect? It's Georgia! Where the family trees have no branches, creationism is bound to take hold.

I'm hoping that the Supreme Court ends up smacking their faces right off, and then attaches them to their asses where they belong... given the court's recent ruling on vouchers, though, I feel this sense of unease...

Up here in New England, they don't even teach Creationism in the Catholic Schools! Of course, they mention little about science. If they yeach Evolutionism in Georgia public schools, all the dumb kids will ask questions like:
"That means I was an ape once?"
"Is evolution like in Star Trek?"
"So, that means the earth is 30 billion years old in dog years?"

The worst one was the attempt by the radical fundamentalist on the school board when I was in high school. Not satisfied with banning: DH Lawerance, Tolkien, Twain, Rynd, Plath (Encourages teen scuicide they said), Virginia Wolfe (See Plath), and Anne Frank. they tried to make Pi equal THREE.

Did you mention to them that in the dark ages everyone was quite comfy domfy with irrational numbers and that zero was the real evil in mathematics?

Oh, and I'm glad I don't live in Georgia. Though my next door neighbours have a daughter called Georgia, and I've met quite a few Georgia's who are very nice, and my sister is called Georgina, which sounds an awful lot like Georgia, and I'm beginning to sound a lot like monty python now...

Why did they wasnt to make pi equal three? Were the kids to stupid to memorize 3.14, which is all you need to pass any high school exam? I once read a book called "Last Safe Place on Earth", and they had a religous parents group that wanted to ban certain books from the school.THe Yosemite Bear wrote:The worst one was the attempt by the radical fundamentalist on the school board when I was in high school. I believe it's because there are a couple passages in the Bible that if taken at face value come out to Pi equalling 3. I can just see it though, a poor kid in geometry going "I can't get it working, I keep dividingthe circumference by the diameter and I keep getting 3.14!" and the teacher going "You must be doing it wrong!"Asst. They really were silly, fortunatly they didn't make any power plays until I was a senior in High School. I was one of the ones that made thier lives miserable, brining up the words "We the people...." and other bits of facts.
I also did brisk trade loaning people books that were now popular because the idiots had taken them from the library.

I remember the Pi thing, and I'll have to find the passage when i'm back on my home PC. If my memory serves me, the passage in question describes the width of the earth and (despite the error where Pi would have to equal 3 for the dimensions to be right) is often held up as proof of the Bible's "accuracy." I'll find the exact spot as soon as I can.
On a side note, has anyone noticed the number of "Biblical Interpretation" books out on the market, and am I the only one it strikes as curious that the "divinely inspired word of god and blueprint for all morals" should need that many aids to understand it?
(and before I get flamed, the part in quotes is *dripping* with sarcasm)

Don't worry. I think we got that.

The only problem I have with them continuing to push their ignorant ideas is that Homo Redneckus tends to breed like crazy, which leads to even more Banjo Playing Cousing Marrying Bible Thumping Morons cluttering up the Earth and annoying the crap out of the rest of us.Lagmonster wrote:You know what? I know of at least two families who've had "extra" children because they don't use birthcontrol, leaving it up to God to decide whether another soul should be sent down to them.
One of these families home schools all FIVE of their kids and their father is definately leaning down the creationist path.
