Christian Fundie group refusing mail with gay postage stamps

Fundamentalist Christian group American Family Association is urging members not to accept any mail postmarked with the U.S. Postal Service’s newly released Harvey Milk stamp, the first U.S. stamp to feature an openly gay elected official.

“Honoring predator Harvey Milk on a U.S. postage stamp is disturbing to say the least. Harvey Milk was a very disreputable man and used his charm and power to prey on young boys with emotional problems and drug addiction,” an AFA press release said Wednesday. “He is the last person we should be featuring on a stamp.”

As one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States, Milk’s efforts to advance LGBT rights earned him the Medal of Freedom posthumously from President Barack Obama in 2009. The 2008 Academy Award-winning biopic "Milk” was also inspired by the icon.

The AFA, however, viewed the historic commemorative stamp as a way for “the radical homosexual lobby” to “undoubtedly encourage businesses to use these stamps -- all in the name of inclusiveness, political correctness and diversity.”

“This is not diversity; this is perversity,” the release concluded.

The AFA, which has been listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center since 2010, advised anyone who receives mail with a Harvey Milk stamp to take the following actions:

1. Refuse to accept the Harvey Milk stamp if offered by your local post office. Instead, ask for a stamp of the United States flag.

2. Refuse to accept mail at your home or business if it is postmarked with the Harvey Milk stamp. Simply write "Return to Sender" on the envelope and tell your postman you won't accept it.

*laughs* Yes, go ahead and refuse mail like that. I should send them checks for large amounts of money, with the Milk stamp, and watch them get returned. Then send them a letter asking why they didn't take my donation.

Unless they wind up cashing it anyway . . . then you're out large sums of money.

I'm thinking more along the lines of child support payments and legal mailings. They could screw themselves over big time by refusing that. :)

Most legal mailings in the US are Pre-Sorted First Class or Metered. The envelopes either come with the postage printed on it, or the company has a machine they rent from the Post Office that weighs the envelope and inks the postage in the corner.

Well yeah, I meant any kind of legal documents you mail yourself, say from an ex-spouse regarding a recent divorce. There are quite a few kinds of letters that are just not wise to refuse.

You're assuming these people fit under any rational defination of "wise", these probably the type of people who'd sooner shoot themselves in the head (literally) then back down even 1 mm from their fantasies about how the world works

They do back down from their fantasies when convenient, it just sucks for the rest until that time. For example, Tevar could send them a rainbow-colored envelope with Milk's stamp to be delivered by a Village People tribute band, and they'd still not return the money.

On topic, I agree that putting Harvey Milk there was extremely unwise. If they were so keen on San Fran, there was that other guy who was elected along with Milk, real upstanding guy, what was his name again? I only know him as 'fucking murderer'.

Why, exactly, is those people shooting themselves in the head rather than accept mail with those stamps a 'bad' thing?

'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'

Headshots result in an awful mess that someone has to clean up, which is a definite downside.
