Yay! Japan Backs Bush
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s ... pan_iraq_7
Japan is going to back the US on the war with Iraq, and is looking specifically towards reconstruction and may dispatch some units for "peacekeeping" roles. Hmmm, this wouldn't happen to do anything with trying to flood Middle Eastern markets with Japanese goods to help their slumping economy or currying US favor for the upcoming N. Korean showdown?

A peacekeeping deployment would be interesting. Japanese law does allow for the deployment of up to 1500 men for up to six months as I recall. However they may only have light weapons, basically rifles, machine guns and unarmored vehicles.
Japan is looking for new markets, but also cheep oil, Iraq will be running at max capacity for a few decades at least, and they have quite a lot of heavy engineering and construction capability available.

It's the same way every other country is hedging their bets on this war: if it goes badly, they want to say "I told you so" and if it goes well, they want in on the action.Trytostaydead wrote:http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s ... pan_iraq_7

My own government is no exception; they have said they will not participate in the war, but they will keep three ships in the gulf for "anti-terror purposes" and they will pledge to contribute toward the rebuilding process.
There was actually a funny cartoon in one of last week's Toronto Star newspapers: it showed Jean Chretien (our so-called leader) moping around and saying "Liberals don't hate America ... we just hate decisiveness".

In fairness, IIRC Canadian troops are still in Afghanistan. You guys are still pulling your share, you're just doing it elsewhere.Darth Wong wrote: It's the same way every other country is hedging their bets on this war: if it goes badly, they want to say "I told you so" and if it goes well, they want in on the action.

More likely Japan knows just exactly what kind of threat a rogue nation with WMD can be, considering who they've been living next door to for the past 50 years.Dennis Toy wrote:Japan is the US's bitch, after they got their anime looking asses handed to them in 1945.
