Does anyone here think this would be a good way to reform the House? Some people think the Senate, these days, thanks to Gerrymandering, is really more representative of the people than the House of Representatives.
So, here's my idea for reform in the House of Representatives, to sweep aside the current system and turn to the Ancient Athenians for inspiration:
We randomly choose people to serve in the House. Totally by random. A computer does it - picking the names of registered voters completely at random.
They serve one year terms and then can never be selected to serve in the House of Representatives again (the selection disregards their names after that), though they can of course run for other public offices freely.
There. We'd have one chamber - The Senate - with direct elections by the people for fixed terms, based on candidates running according to party affiliation by State.
This would be balanced by another chamber filled with registered voters chosen totally at random to serve in it for one year, and only one year. The ultimate representation of the citizenry.
If we can have electronic voting machines considered safe from fraud, it doesn't seem impossible to proof such a system from fraud, either, if the work is done properly.
What do you think? Would such a balance - One chamber, the Senate as it is now, directly elected, and the other, a reformed House, randomly chosen, improve our democracy?
Randomly chosen House.
