Honestly I'm stunned to see Beck of all people being charitable to these kids.Glenn Beck on Tuesday announced that he will be bringing tractor-trailers full of food, water, teddy bears and soccer balls to McAllen, Texas on July 19 as a way to help care for some of the roughly 60,000 underage refugees who have crossed into America illegally in 2014.
Beck said he will be joined by Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah), Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), and a number of pastors and rabbis.
“Through no fault of their own, they are caught in political crossfire,” Beck said of the children. “And while we continue to put pressure on Washington and change its course of lawlessness, we must also help. It is not either, or. It is both. We have to be active in the political game, and we must open our hearts.”
Beck said that “everybody” told him not to talk about other controversial issues, like the caliphate, in the past, and that he is hearing the same thing about his stance that we must care for the children who have crossed into America illegally.
“Everybody is telling me I’m seeing subscriptions down; I’m seeing Mercury One donations down,” Beck said, growing emotional. “I’m getting violent emails from people who say I’ve ‘betrayed the Republic.’ Whatever. I’ve never taken a position more deadly to my career than this — and I have never, ever taken a position that is more right than this.”
“We’re going to fill some tractor-trailers with food, with water,” Beck said. “The churches have asked us if we could bring teddy bears and soccer balls, so we’ve loaded up a whole tractor-trailer of nothing but teddy bears and soccer balls. And then I’m going to go serve breakfast and lunch, and I’m going to help unload these trucks, hot meals for 3,000. That’s what we’re doing.”
“We sure could use your help,” Beck continued. “I would like to ask you to donate to MercuryOne.org. If you don’t want to be involved in this, you don’t have to be. You can donate and earmark your money to be for preserving American history; we have a museum to build. … You could do it to help education. … We’re building hospitals. … But all the things that we do, they’re not about politics, because politics is turning us ugly. Politics is the vehicle that is driving us to the fundamental transformation of America.”
“When America stops being good, we are no longer able to be great,” Beck concluded.

It is surprising. Let us hope it is genuine and not a scam like other right-wing charities.

Re: Glenn Beck replaced with Bizarro clone
He's done similar-ish things at least once before, IIRC. It's mostly just trying to rack up good PR.
That, and it doesn't take an idiot to realize that being shitty to kids-- even if they're illegal immigrant kids-- looks pretty terrible on TV. It's the political principle of baby-kissing all over again. His faith (Mormon with considerable Protestant/Baptist influences) may also play a part in this.
Either way, if he brings material benefit to these immigrant kids, good for him.

It's because he's trying to help Gohmert and Lee walk back some of the truly noxious "invasion" talk they've spewed.

The idea that Beck is doing this for anything more than to benefit his own agenda is flawed. But it does potentially help out kids who need it.
Why not footballs or baseballs Glenn Beck? Are you some kind of euro-commi?...bringing tractor-trailers full of food, water, teddy bears and soccer balls to McAllen,

I don't doubt he's doing it to serve his own agenda, it's just weird. It's like Ann Coulter coming out and saying that women should burn their bras and enjoy some anal sex.TheHammer wrote:This ^Block wrote:It's because he's trying to help Gohmert and Lee walk back some of the truly noxious "invasion" talk they've spewed.

Re: Glenn Beck replaced with Bizarro clone
This is where I think Obama cares more about politics than leading.
There is no reason why he couldn't have visited the children and arranged for food and supplies to be delivered along with him. It's because he's afraid how the GOP and Fox News would react.

Do you mean simultaneously with the visit by Beck and the others, or at some other time?
If you mean the former I doubt he was invited or even told this would be happening until the press releases came out. If you mean the latter, you may be right... on the other hand, it's not like the President doesn't have plenty of good reasons to stay in the White House.

This has been in the news for a least a week and while he was in Texas. Obama might not have been invited but at the very least his staffers knew. I am not sure why it matters.

Re: Glenn Beck replaced with Bizarro clone
A President's itinerary is typically very tight. While it happens on occasion, generally they can't just take a side-trip from wherever they're going. If they made a habit of changing their schedules on short notice, they'd piss off a lot of people pretty quickly, so that's why exceptions are fairly rare.
The fact that Beck's act of charity stands out so much is pretty damning when it comes to the right-wing in American politics. Charity should not be a rare act.

In this case Obama skipped the border to go to fundraisers which I don't sympathize with him for but hardly consider a unique political choice to him. He picked between pissing off federal and state bueracrats and voters of a state that rejects him anyway or some rich like minded doners. Is anyone surprised at which one an American politician went with?
