The Tripods were actually a fairly formidable fighting force. They'd be no match for a modern force without their mind control, but they should have no trouble against such archaic foes. The tripods would loom invincible over the battlefield and mow down all foes with their tentacles.

(For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, this is in reference to John Christopher's Tripod series.)

Judging from one episode where a few Autobots and Decepticons got flung back to Merlin's era, I'd say it's not that easy. True, they're all but invincible to weapons of the era, but they won't be able to expend that much energy from their guns before running out of juice. Worse still, they wound up unable to transform, until Merlin summoned a thunderstorm to rejuvenate Our Heros(tm).
