R2. He can hack anything, carry lots of data, and he's a straight-up mackdaddy with the women. What woman can resist that smooth dome, that shiney metal, and his special attachments?

r2 being able to hack anything seems like more of a brain bug than an actual ability. Also, lets not forget EsB when he mistook a power socket for a computer terminal.
Ghent, an untrained slicer, was cracking military codes for fun and profit better than the best the NR had to offer, and I would thin that includes Bothans from the infamous spynet as well.

R2. Vulcans are vastly over-rated and Data is incompetant. They can only hack their way into Romulan security systems because the systems themselves are crap. Don't know enough about the other choices to make an analysis.

IIRC R2 hacked a SSD in DE which rammed the Galaxy Gun thereby destroying Byss. He aslo hacked the World Devastors. He carried the Death Star plans with him. Han was confident in R2s abilities in opening the blast doors on Endor.
He seems to be the best man-errr...droid, for the job.

R2. Aside of his enormous storage capacity (Death Star schematics) and his hacking skills, he's also **DURABLE**. R2 has been blasted by TIE Fighter's laser cannons (ANH), throwed several feet by a swamp creature on Dagobah (TESB), and blasted by blaster bolt on Endor (ROTJ), yet he still functions properly after repair. Moreover, he is still the same R2. So it means that the memory that keep his droid "personalities" is intact despite all those catasthrope.

you forget survivng the escape from naboo in TPM, even though he didn't get hit that was pretty ballzy. Also, his initiating a complete shutdown of the droid foundry in AoTC was rahter well done, but I don't think that demonstrates an ability to hack into a computer and obtain information as the thread sugests. Plus, the Geonosis Foundry was an entirely automated operation, which leads me to believe that there was a large variety of problems that r2 could exploit.
Still, calling r2d2 the ultimate slicer based on evidence from the movies is a little extreme. In ANH all he did was openand lock doors (a lock which was overridden) and turn off the garbage compactor. I don't think that required very much in the way of security clearance to do in the first place. His storage caacity is rather amazing but for an advanced civilization like the SW galaxy I would have to think that their Zip Drives are rather impressive and easy software to install in an astromech.
in TESB he mistook a POWER SOCKET for a COMPUTER TERMINAL. That to me seemed rather ridiculous. TeSB did show that his scanner were rather impressive though. Then, in RoTJ he was unable to finish the task han gave him after being hit by blastter fire. But opening doors is far different from breaking into complicated security systems.
this brings us to Dark Empire, where the "R2 can hack Everything" Brainbug has infiltrated everyone's mind. His attack against the Galaxy Gun was well done (but a cop out in the scrpit nonetheless, that sucked for oth Eclipse II and The Galaxy Gun which deserved better deaths)

The very fact that he took the risk of that happening makes him a even better canidate for this job. and for that scene he definatally deserves at least a purple heartIG-88E wrote:Uh, hello? Ghent would be my choice, if EU is allowed.Darth Fanboy wrote: Ghent, an untrained slicer, was cracking military codes for fun and profit better than the best the NR had to offer, and I would thin that includes Bothans from the infamous spynet as well.
And remember, the Bothans weren't THAT good. Palpatine hinted he LET them find info on the DSII, and some of my more favorite EU books talk about the Imps just "dropping the Bothans a morsel or 2 ever now and then to keep them happy", but keeping them under control. Ghent on the other hand was appointed MASTER SLICER OF THE NEW REPUBLIC in the EU books, I think that is pretty damn good. Plus, he is always out of place when not among computers, which seems a lot like me. (don't flame me, i just admitted I'm a "nerd")
