flag pledge
interesting thing today - every morning in school, we stand up and listen to the pledge. today, first class was german class, and every time before ive seen them all stand up. this time, a third didnt, and the rest were looking rather serious about it.
also, a chick in my science class who as been against the war for as long as Ive known, said she supported the war cuz she heard about how the iraqis were treated.
I thot it interesting.

I still stand, even though I hate the current adminstration. Granted when I say the pledge I say the orignal.

My high school still did it. We also had something called "the moment of silence" (which is just code for prayer in schools).

we have moments of silence for teen deaths by car accident, 9/11, and outright war.
oh, and today was the most unpolitical day I ever saw at my school. iraq was like the great there/not there; on everyone's minds, on no one's lips. I was in one convo I didnt start about it, and the others felt stilted.
we were all chatting about the daily gossip, field trips, relationships, classes, music. reminds me of theonion article - america wishes it could concentrate on stupid shit again.

I se the original pledge. I am not pledging alegnce to the country, but rather to the republic. and as such, am finding more difficult to pledge allegance to a republic that spits in my face.neoolong wrote:I never associated the Pledge with the actions of the current administration. So while one can still give the pledge, which supposedly honors America, it is different than doing so to the actions of the current government.

Well, you don't have to spend the moment of silence praying, or at least the one at my school. Was it any different at your school?Durran Korr wrote:My high school still did it. We also had something called "the moment of silence" (which is just code for prayer in schools).

They don't force you to pray, but let's not kid ourselves. There is no other conceivable reason why a moment of silence needs to be taken at the start of every school day.Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. In my old schools they made you stand up for it, but the teachers didn't really care if you didn't say anything. I didn't. I thought it was stupid. After all, I try to be as honorable as possible, and if I said that pledge while I was selling secrets to the Commies I would be a hypocrite.

Of course, Christians assume that everyone prays like they do: drearily and depressingly. What if I want to pray to Baal, who likes it when I stand up and make lots of noise?Durran Korr wrote:They don't force you to pray, but let's not kid ourselves. Of course, but do they make you pray to a certain god (if at all), as is the case with school prayer. Is a student embarrased if they don't pray during that time? Still, I think that is someone wants to pray, they can do it on their own time, and consider such moments uncessary.Durran Korr wrote:They don't force you to pray, but let's not kid ourselves. My elementary school said the pledge for the Kindergarten, first, and second grade classes. Other than that, none of my schools (or the other schools in the district) ever said the pledge on a daily basis. At assemblies, they'd start off with the pledge.ArmorPierce wrote:Most schools still says the pledge.

That would have made an interesting experiment in Catholic school.Durandal wrote:Of course, Christians assume that everyone prays like they do: drearily and depressingly. Kids aren't forced to do anything. Most people, including the teachers, just sit there and stare vacantly for as long as it lasts (I know I did). The point is that it is clearly caving into the demands of religious types who demand time be set aside for prayer in school. School is for learning, nor spiritual bullshit. The moment of silence really accomplishes nothing that public schools ought to be doing.Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Near the end of HS I went through a Angry Libertarian (tm) phase and abstained from saying the pledge. No one gave me any shit for it, though.IG-88E wrote:My HS required you to get your lazy bum outta your seat for the pledge. You didn't have to say it, although I did.
